Another Round

In October 2021, I watched Another Round for the first time at Kinema Junpo Theater. The Danish film was released in September 2021 starring Mads Mikkelsen who is called a Scandinavian treasure in Japan.

Although I had thought that it tells a story about a man who becomes the subject of a full-scale experiment done by a university or a laboratory in order to prove that persons can have fulfilling private life and work with moderate alcohol, yet it just depicts four close high school teachers who try to kind of seriously test a scholar's theory about moderate alcohol's effect on their lives and fall into a situation that drinking persons can imagine.

Friendship among the four men were heartwarming. So were how Martin, a history teacher looking dumb, played by Mikkelsen gradually gives intriguing lessons with the help of alcohol and how his students' expression become lively. Then I was drawn by the drama of Martin facing a midlife crisis and his wife. Mikkelsen also shows a brilliant dance as if he is taking out pent-up frustration caused by playing a lame ordinary man at the last scene. The ending was really refreshing.

About Denmark, I only knew chocolate Danish and I remembered that we played against the country in the group stage of the 202 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Tomasson, a former teammate of Japanese legend Shinji Ono at Feyenoord in the Netherlands league, scored on a penalty kick in the game, however, after that he was injured and replaced. That was kind of why we easily won the game. In addition to the memories, I could learn the Scandinavian country's atmosphere a little thanks to the movie. Watching foreign flicks is meaningful because I can enjoy myself feeling an air of each country and something which I never can learn from literal information.

アナザーラウンド

2021年10月、キネマ旬報シアターにて『アナザーラウンド』を初観賞。2021年９月公開のデンマーク映画。主演は、日本では「北欧の至宝」と呼ばれているマッツ・ミケルセン。

適度のアルコールが仕事やプライベートを充実させる事を証明するための大学か研究所による本格的な実験の被疑者になる男の物語、かと思いきや、実際には、適度のアルコールの効果について書かれたある学者の論文が正しいかどうかを割と真面目に確かめようとした仲良し高校教師４人組が、ある時から、飲むのが好きな人間なら誰しもが想像できるような展開に陥るお話。

その４人の友情が微笑ましかった。そして、マッツ様演じる冴えない歴史教師マーティンがお酒の力を借りて興味深い授業を始める様やその授業を受ける生徒たちの表情が生き生きとし出す様が微笑ましかった。まさに中年の危機を迎えていたマーティンとその妻とのドラマもまた観応えがあった。ラストシーンでは、マッツ様が、ダサい一般男性を演じた鬱憤を晴らすかのようなキレキレダンスを披露。爽快なエンディングだった。

デンマークと言えば、チョコデニッシュと2010年のサッカー南アフリカワールドカップで日本と対戦した国という知識しかなかった。あの試合では、オランダリーグのフェイエノールトで我らが小野伸二の同僚だったトマソンがPKを決めたが、その後、彼が負傷退場したこともあり楽に勝つことが出来た。そして、今回、この作品のおかげで新たにその北欧の国の雰囲気を若干だが知る事が出来た。外国映画の観賞は、文字情報だけでは得ることが出来ないその国の空気感等が堪能できて有意義だ。

The Courier

In October 2021, I watched The Courier for the first time at Movix Kameari. The American-British spy film is released in 2020 starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

It is based on the true story about Greville Wynne, a businessman in London, who was requested by the Secret Intelligence Service to assist its espionage and got to undertake it.

If an ordinary businessman living for his family's happiness was requested by his nation's intelligence organization to go to a foreign country under the guise of business trips and contact an informant who has classified information, he at first would reluctantly cooperate with it for world peace, gradually have patriotism that he had not done so much, get ready to work for it and finally become friends with the foreign informant. I can imagine that, however, nobody can do the act of chivalry that Mr. Wynne performed for the Soviet spy behind the Cuban Missile Crisis. Basically, it was reckless.

Benedict Cumberbatch gave a wonderful performance as Mr. Wynne who worries about the safety of the traitor to his homeland and continues to struggle even after he has fulfilled his jobs. The acting of Cumberbatch toward the ending especially was really emotional and reminded me of Kevin Bacon acting in Murder in the First.

I had viewed Thirteen Days and JFK, so I thought that I had known about the Cuban Crisis so much, however, the flick was more meaningful because it kind of showed me the role that the actual intelligence organization played behind the American politician's distress. Although I enjoy seeing the activities of super spies like James Bond and Ethan Hunt, yet I am intrigued in doing the ones of real ones like ones in the movie because I can enjoy a sense of more real tension.

The spy motion picture is wonderful and depicts a more serious human drama than the entertaining spy ones like the 007 franchise and the Mission: Impossible series.

クーリエ：最高機密の運び屋

2021年10月、Movix亀有にて『クーリエ：最高機密の運び屋』を初観賞。2020年公開。イギリスのスパイ映画。ベネディクト・ガンバーバッチ主演。

1960年代にイギリスの諜報機関MI６からスパイ活動の手助けを要請されてそれを引き受けてしまったロンドンのセールスマン、グレヴィル・ウィンの実話を基にした物語。

女房子供を幸せにするのが生きがいである一介のサラリーマンが、国の諜報機関から、ビジネスを装って外国に出張してその国の機密情報提供者と接触する事を依頼された場合、まず、世界平和の為ならと渋々協力、やがて、普段感じていなかった愛国心が芽生えてやりがいを感じるようになり、かの国のスパイにも次第に情が湧いてくる。ここまでは想像がつくが、キューバ危機の影でウィンさんがソ連のスパイに示した男気は絶対に真似できない。そもそも無謀だ。

ベネディクト・カンバーバッチが、MI６から依頼された仕事を全うしたにもかかわらず、世界平和の為に祖国を裏切ったソ連の内通者の安否を気遣い奮闘するウィンさんを見事に好演。特に、終盤のカンバーバッチの姿は、『告発』のケヴィン・ベーコンを連想するほど感動的だった。

キューバ危機に関しては『13デイズ』や『JFK』で何となく知っているつもりになっていたが、本作での、政治家たちの苦悩の影で実際の諜報機関がどういう役割を果たしていたのか少しだけ垣間見えて有意義だった。ジェームズ・ボンドやイーサン・ハントのようなスーパースパイの活動を観るのも楽しいが、本作のような実際のスパイの地道な活動を観るのもよりリアルな緊張感が味わえて面白い。

『007』や『ミッション・インポッシブル』のような娯楽作品以上にシリアスなヒューマン・ドラマが描かれたスパイ映画の名作だ。

Minamata

In September 2021, I watched Minamata for the first time at Toho Cinemas Nagareyama Ootakanomori. The American drama film is released in 2020 starring Johnny Depp.

It depicts the later years of W. Eugene Smith, an American photographer, who photographed and documented people living in Minamata City with mercury poisoning, the so-called Minamata disease that occurred due to the mercury discharged from a factory without treatment in the city of Kumamoto Prefecture. It was based on a true story.

I had imagined it to be depressive before watching it, however, the drama of the sufferers and their families was not excessively staged, though the kind of films tend to be pathetic more than enough. It is simple and also focus on the way of life of the old photographer Eugene played by Johnny Depp whose acting was excellent like always.

Famous Japanese actors appear in it. Tadanobu Asano, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ryo Kase and Jun Kunimura gave a good performance as well as Depp. So did Minami. The wonderful bilingual actor played Aileen who acts in coordination with Mr. Smith and marries him.

I was surprised that the shooting locations were not in Japan because it recreated Japanese scenery in those days really well in spite of the fact that Americans filmed it, moreover, the flick describes Japan better than ones that are set in Japan like Black Rain and The Last Samurai.

The Minamata disease tragedy has continued still now. Then the ugly side of a capitalistic society is common in the countries. The movie is meaningful and wonderful.

MINAMATA-ミナマタ-

2021年９月、TOHOシネマズ流山おおたかの森にて『MINAMATA-ミナマタ-』を初観賞。2020年公開。アメリカ製作のドラマ映画。主演はジョニー・デップ。

熊本県水俣市の工場にて1932年から無処理で垂れ流された水銀によって周辺の住民が患った水銀中毒、通称、水俣病に関する実話とそれを現地で取材したアメリカ人写真家W・ユージン・スミスの晩年を描いた作品。

陰鬱な作品かと思いきや、ジョニー・デップ演じる人間臭い老写真家の生き様にも焦点を当てたその物語には、この手の作品にありがちな悲壮感がそれほど無く、当事者たちの人間ドラマへの過度な演出も無くてとても観易かった。そして、ジョニーデップの演技はいつものように素晴らしかった。

浅野忠信、真田広之、加瀬亮、そして、國村隼といった有名日本人俳優も出演。全員、デップに負けていない演技だった。そして、スミスと行動をともにして後に彼の妻となったアイリーンを美波が熱演。英語が堪能な素敵な俳優さんだ。

アメリカ製作の作品ながら当時の日本をリアルに再現していたので、ロケ地が外国だったことを知った時は驚いた。その上、日本を舞台にした過去の作品、『ブラック・レイン』や『ラスト・サムライ』よりもより良く日本を描写しているように感じた。

未だに続いている水俣病の悲劇。資本主義社会の醜い部分は万国共通。有意義で素敵な良作だ。

The Suicide Squad

In September 2021, I watched the film The Suicide Squad at Movix Kameari. The American movie was released in 2021. I had not watched Suicide Squad released in 2016, so I had thought that I should have done it before. However, I had heard that I could have enjoyed myself doing it without previous knowledge, so I did it with no preparation. I recently knew that it was the 10th installment of the DC Extended Universe, DCEU.

The story depicts the Suicide Squad, a special force formed by DC Comics villains under the control of the U.S. government, to carry out a mission. The squad is dispatched to an island country in South American and fight fierce battles.

The flick is full of comic and violent action scenes with too much gore. It is light, stylish and hard-boiled. What an entertainment masterpiece! I was really captivated by how Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie violently fight after being tortured and how she bites an apple and viciously smiles at the squad leader.

One week later, I watched the film again at United Cinemas Terrace Mall Matsudo. I was glued to Margot Robbie the last time but I was fascinated by not only her but also some other characters, especially a shark man named Nanaue and a rat charmer called Cleo for the second time. I was amused by Nanaue, a hybrid of a man and a shark, who is a terrible creature always trying to eat human beings but is kind of endearing because it listens to Cleo, moreover, I liked Cleo, if anything, I preferred rats that she controls. Seeing the rats standing by the squad fighting a giant enemy, I felt that the toughest living things are not cockroaches but sewer rats on earth. Although I did not like the phrase "I want to be beautiful like sewer rats" in the song "Linda Linda" by the Japanese rock band The Blue Hearts, yet I have redefined my idea of the stanza a little looking at the rats in it. I still do not regard them as beautiful but I think that they have the right of living and look cute depending on how to look at them.

ザ・スーサイド・スクワッド

2021年９月、Movix亀有にて『ザ・スーサイド・スクワッド “極”悪党、集結』を初観賞した。2021年公開のアメリカ映画。2016年公開の『スーサイド・スクワッド』を観ていなかったので、それを観た後の方がいいかなとも思ったが、前知識無しでも楽しめる作品とも聞いたので予習をせずに観覧。DCエクステンデッド・ユニバース（DCEU）の10作品目だという事を今回初めて知った。

DCコミックスの悪者たちが、スーサイド・スクワッドという特殊部隊をアメリカ政府の命令で結成させられ、与えられたミッションを遂行するお話。本作では、そのスーサイド・スクワッドが、南米の島国に送り込まれその地で死闘を繰り広げる。

ゴア描写が無駄に多い、コメディ要素満載のハンパないアクション映画。ノリが軽くてスタイリッシュでハードボイルド。娯楽映画の傑作だ。マーゴット・ロビー演じるハーレイ・クインの、拷問後の暴れっぷりとリンゴをかじりながらチームリーダーに向ける邪悪な笑みが素敵すぎた。

一週間後、ユナイテッド・シネマ テラスモール松戸にて再観覧。前回はマーゴット・ロビーにくぎ付けになったが、２回目は彼女だけではなく他のキャラの活躍ぶりにも魅せられた。特にサメ人間ナナウエとネズミ使いのクレオに惹きつけられた。ナナウエは、サメと人間のハイブリッドという設定で、すぐに人間を食べたがるという恐ろしい生き物だが、クレオの言う事は聴くという可愛い面もあって可笑しかった。そして、クレオ、というよりは、彼女が操るネズミたち。巨大な敵との闘いで活躍した彼らを見ながら、世界最強の生物はゴキブリではなくドブネズミだなと思った。ロックバンド、ブルーハーツの「リンダリンダ」の歌詞「ドブネズミみたいに美しくなりたい」というフレーズはあまり好きではなかったが、本作の彼らを見て少し考えを改めた。まだ美しくは見えないが、彼らにだって生存の権利はあるし、見方によっては可愛い生き物だ。

Black Widow

In July 2021, I watched the film Black Widow for the first time at United Cinemas Terrace Mall Matsudo. The action film was released in 2021. The 24th installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series. I have not watched the MCU movies but Iron Man and have not done movies based on Marvel Comics expect for some X-Men movies and the Spider-Man series, so I could not understand several lines. I should have watched at least Marvel's The Avengers and Captain America: Civil War.

The story follows a female fighter named Natasha who fights the organization called Red Room with her fellows like her families.

I had been dying to watch Florence Pugh in it at theater, so I was happy I could watch her for a longer time than I had expected. She was pretty, cool and charming as always, moreover, she was good in action. I was at once captivated by her attractive acting and I was following and gazing at just her so much that it might have happened that Florence on the screen directly told me that I was watching her too much and I should watch other characters, like an actor on the screen talks to the protagonist in the movie The Purple Rose of Cairo.

The main character, Natasha, played by Scarlett Johansson is like a big sister to Yelena done by Pugh. I do not like Johansson, however, she steadily acted the protagonist. Then Rachel Weisz gave a good performance as Melina who is like a mother to Natasha and Yelena. She was beautiful as always but she seemed to be not good in action.

I feasted my eyes on all of the performances by Pugh, especially the conversation and action scenes in which Pugh and Johansson are acting. I wanted to keep watching their sisterhood as long as possible.

In August 2021, I did it again at Cinema Ikspiari. I did Captain America: Civil War before and in preparation for that but I was just confused by the number of the heroes in it. The second time I did, I could enjoy myself more than the last time, though I could not understand all of the dialogues yet. I am looking forward to the sequel.

ブラック・ウィドウ

2021年７月、ユナイテッド・シネマ テラスモール松戸にて『ブラック・ウィドウ』を初観賞した。2021年公開のアクション映画。マーベル・シネマティック・ユニバースの第24作目。MCUの作品は『アイアンマン』しか観ていないので、また、マーベル・コミック原作の映画も『スパイダーマン』や『X-メン』を数作品しか観てないので、謎のセリフが多かった。せめて、『アベンジャーズ』と『シビル・ウォー／キャプテン・アメリカ』は観ておくべきだった。

ナターシャという名の女戦士が家族のような仲間と共にレッドルームなる組織と闘うお話。

観覧のお目当てはフローレンス・ピュー。予想以上に出演シーンが長くて嬉しかった。相変わらず綺麗でクールで可愛くて、そして、本作ではなかなかのアクションも披露していた。魅惑的な彼女の立ち居振る舞いにすぐメロメロになり、ウッディ・アレンの『カイロの紫のバラ』でスクリーン上の俳優が観覧していた主人公の女性に話しかけていたように、演技中のピュー嬢から「私を見過ぎ。もっと他の出演者も見て」と言われても仕方ないほど、彼女ばかり目で追っていた。

主人公は、ピュー嬢が演じていたエレーナの姉貴分のナターシャ。スカーレット・ヨハンセンが演じている。あまり好きな女優さんではないが、本作ではしっかりと主演の仕事をこなしていた。そして、エレーナとナターシャの母親役メリーナをレイチェル・ワイズが好演。あまりアクションは得意ではないようだが、相変わらずお綺麗だった。

眼福だったのは、フローレンス・ピューの演技の全てと、彼女とスカーレット・ヨハンセンのアクション場面におけるコンビネーションや会話のシーン。お二人のシスターフッドはいつまでも観ていたかった。

そして、2021年８月にシネマイクスピアリにて再観覧。その前に『シビル・ウォー』を観賞したが、ヒーローが多すぎて逆に混乱した。ただ、本作に関しては、分からないセリフがまだあったが、７月の時よりもより楽しめた。続編が楽しみだ。

Godzilla vs. Kong

In July 2021, I watched the movie Godzilla vs. Kong for the first time at Toho Cinemas Nagareyama Ootakenomori. The monster film was released in 2021.

When I was a child, I was not interested in TV series with special effects like Ultraman because they look childish, so Shin Godzilla released in 2016 is the first Godzilla movie that I have fully watched. Watching it on my television set, I keenly felt that I should have done it at a theater, so I did the latest Godzilla one on IMAX with 3D glasses.

The story describes the battle among Godzilla, Kong and Mechagodzilla.

I first knew that it was the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse series after watching it. Although I had not watched the previous three ones, yet I was fully amazed.

The tough and hard-boiled Godzilla versus the kind of gentle Kong who can listen to his favorite girl. Both giant monsters are impossible to hate. Their battle scenes in Hong Kong was exciting and overwhelming. The powerful CGI pictures were so fantastic that the human dramas seemed meaningless.

I was sorry that Shun Oguri appearing in it looked like an ordinary Asian who was not associated with a Japanese. I felt uncomfortable especially watching the scene, in which the Japanese actor rolls his eyes up into his head, feeling that Asians are taken lightly. I wonder if participating in the movie was profitable for him. It might be meaningful in terms of that experiences are useful, though I doubt that he left an impression.

I laughed at a character seriously talking about Illuminati and some tap water. It was amusing that some Americans seem to believe in such urban legends which some Japanese talk about in a proud tone. I also believe in them a little, though.

ゴジラvsコング

2021年７月、『ゴジラvsコング』をTOHOシネマズ流山おおたかの森にて初観賞。2021年公開の怪獣映画。

子供の頃、『ウルトラマン』のような特撮ヒーロー物は、幼稚に見えて興味が無かった。その為、初めてフルで観たゴジラ映画は2016年公開の『シン・ゴジラ』。TVでの観賞中、そのハンパない迫力の映像に、これは映画館で観るべきだったと痛感した。そして、今回、最新作をIMAXにて３Dで観覧した。

ゴジラとキングコング、そして、メカゴジラの怪物同士が格闘するお話。

今回、本作がモンスターバースなるシリーズの第４作に当たる事を初めて知ったが、前３作の知識が無くても十分楽しめた。

硬派でハードボイルド感漂うゴジラと好きな女の言う事には耳を傾ける軟派なコング。どちらも憎めない怪物だ。そして、彼らの香港での乱闘シーンにはただただ圧倒された。ホントに素晴らしいCGIで、人間たちのドラマがどうでもよくなるほどの迫力だった。

出演していた小栗旬がただのアジア人俳優に見えて日本人っぽさを感じられなかったのが残念。特に白目をむく場面は、アジア人が軽んじられているようにも見えて観ていて気分が悪くなった。この作品への出演は、彼にとってはプラスだったのだろうか。何事も経験、と言う意味では有意義だったかもしれないが、爪痕を残したとは思えない。

笑ってしまったのはイルミナティや水道水の話を真面目に語っている男がいた事。日本でも語られている都市伝説を信じている人たちが、私も多少は信じているが、アメリカにもいるのが可笑しかった。

Nobody

In July 2021, I watched the film Nobody at Movix Kameari. The action movie was released in 2021

The story follows an ordinary middle-aged man who has led a dull life and starts to get villains on the occasion of an incident.

I had expected that the story would describe a dull middle-aged man who feels despair in his life, becomes desperate and explodes in the end like a man in Unhinged, however, the protagonist's identity was quite incredible, though he looks to be dull like the man played by Russell Crowe and he is not too strong to overwhelm the thugs in a bus fight despite his incredible identity. I liked how realistically his strength is described anyway. Bob Odenkirk played well as the middle-aged man. If a tough and handsome actor like Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves have acted the man, the action scenes would have been cooler. I like a unique air that the subdued Odenkirk has, though.

By the way, I vaguely got curious about the ages of the three actors and I checked them. Odenkirk is the same age as Cruise and he is Reeves' senior by two years. All of them are the same generation. Although Odenkirk looks his age, yet Cruise and Reeves look amazingly young for their ages.   

Before watching it, I had expected that the movie would encourage exhausted middle-aged men, then until I watched it in the middle, I had thought that it was saying that you should not underestimate middle-aged men and that you should not show off, however, I gradually realized that I was wrong. The protagonist is quite strong for me who have totally recognized how much my strength has declined, so I cannot identify with him at all. In fact, you cannot have an illusion that you can fight a group of young thugs who are used to when you have become middle-aged as long as you have received special training and have taken part in battle missions for many years or who have your physical gift and have kept on building up your body.

The flick is an entertainment action in which a weak looking middle-aged man will change on an occasion and start to fight the villains. Viewers might as well just casually enjoy watching the awesome action scenes. I made a mistake in how to enjoy it from the beginning. I will easily watch it just as an entertainment next time.

Mr. ノーバディ

2021年７月、Movix亀有にて『Mr. ノーバディ』を初観賞。2021年公開のアクション映画。

冴えない日々を送っているごく平凡に見えるオジサンが、ある事を機に悪者たちをやっつけ始めるお話。

『アオラレ』みたいにサエないオッサンが人生に絶望してやけになってキレる展開かと思いきや、そうではなかった。主人公は、同じく見た目はサエないオッサンなのだが、その正体がハンパなかった。ただ、ハンパない割には、バスの中でのチンピラとの格闘で超人的な強さは発揮しない。その点は、逆にリアルで嫌いではないが。ボブ・オデンカークがそんなオッサンを好演。もしトム・クルーズやキアヌ・リーヴスのような精悍なハンサム俳優が演じていたら、よりカッコいいアクションに仕上がっていただろうが、渋いオデンカークの独特の雰囲気も悪くないと思う。

因みに、何となく気になって３人の年齢を調べてみたところ、オデンカークはクルーズと同い年でキアヌより２歳上。３人ともほぼ同世代だ。年齢を考えると、オデンカークは年相応だが、他のお２人の若々しさは驚異的だ。

観覧前は、世の疲れた中年男性にエールを送る物語だろうと予想していた。そして、前半は、オッサンをなめるな、とか、能ある鷹は爪を隠す、という事を表現しようとしているのかなと思いながら観ていたが、徐々にそうではないと気付きだした。主人公の強さは、体が衰えていることを骨身に沁みて実感している私には自己投影なんか出来っこないレベル。実際、オッサンになっても街の喧嘩慣れした若いチンピラのグループと大立ち回りができるなんて、若い頃に特殊な訓練を受けて過酷な任務を何年もこなしたか、恵まれた体格を有した上でその体を若い頃から鍛え続けていない限り、ただの幻想だ。

本作は、冴えない風貌のおじさんがあるきっかけで変貌してカッコよく悪者と闘う姿をただ楽しむアクション娯楽作。端から観方を間違えていた。次回はそういう映画として気楽に観ようと思う。

The Goonies

The other day, I watched the movie The Goonies for the first time on my television set. I had not known about it except for the theme song sung by Cindy Lauper until then. The kid adventure movie was released in 1985.

The story describes the adventure of a children's group called the Goonies that is formed of Chunk, Mouth, Data, Mikey and Mikey's big brother, Brand. The Goonies and Brand's two female friends search for the treasure hided by a legendary pirate named One-Eyed Willy.

The scene of the chubby Chunk's appearance and the relationship between Chunk and Mouth reminded me of the one between Vern and Teddy in Stand by Me that I have watched many times. Plump and funny kids like Chunk and Vern might often be seen in the United States. Come to think of it, child actors like them are sometimes seen in Japanese dramas and films. I feel overweight children to be charming and amusing. Corey Feldman played the talkative Mouth and Teddy. He was a popular child actor those days and costarred with River Phoenix in Stand by Me the next year. The two child actors appearing together must have quite interested the movie fans at the time. It has increased the enjoyment of watching the famous flick again.

The scenes of the boys, the Goonies, riding their bicycles and the relationship between the brothers Mikey and Brand reminded me of E.T. that was directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1982. Spielberg is the executive producer of the 1985 movie and created the story of it. I think that the story is enjoyable thanks to that. The movie was good but it actually was not my taste because I am not interested in ancient civilizations and legends centuries ago. I, however, would have enjoyed myself watching it the other day due in part to nostalgia if I had watched it for the first time when I was a child or at least in my teens and twenties when I still remembered my childhood. I believe that the film entertains fans of the Indiana Jones series directed by Spielberg anyway.

I first watched the Tim Burton movie Batman released in 1989 two years ago. Although I had anticipated that it would be wonderful because it was highly rated by movie fans, yet it was just good because I could not help comparing the old movie with the Christopher Nolan movie The Dark Knight released in 2008 which I watched around the same time. The Goonies is also highly rated but the old movie was just good for me. Blockbusters reflects the times, so I would better watch them as soon as possible if I have a chance of doing them.

グーニーズ

先日、『グーニーズ』をTV画面にて初観賞した。それまではシンディ・ローパーがテーマ曲を歌っているくらいしか知らなかった。1985年公開の少年冒険映画。

グーニーズを名乗る少年たち、チャンク、マウス、データ、マイキー、マイキーの兄ブランドにブランドの２人の女友だちが加わり、伝説の海賊、片目のウィリーの残した宝物を探し出す冒険譚。

ぽっちゃり少年のチャンクが登場するシーンと、彼とマウスの関係が、何度も観ている『スタンド・バイ・ミー』のバーンとテディのそれを思い出させる。チャンクとバーンのような、小太りな面白い少年はアメリカにはよくいるのだろうか。考えてみたら、日本にもよくいそうなキャラだ。肥満気味の子供は可愛くて何だか可笑しい。おしゃべりマウスとテディを演じているのはコリー・フェルドマン。当時は人気子役だったようだ。本作の翌年にリヴァー・フェニックスと『スタンド・バイ・ミー』で共演。当時の映画ファンにとっては興味深い組み合わせだったに違いない。あの名作の再観賞時の楽しみが増えた。

そして、グーニーズの少年たちが自転車に乗っているシーンや弟マイキーと兄ブランドの関係性が、1982年公開のスティーヴン・スピルバーグ監督作『E.T.』を思い出させた。スピルバーグは本作の原作者でもあり製作総指揮でもあるらしい。そのせいかストーリーは面白かった。ただ、映画自体も割と面白かったが、古代文明や何百年前の伝説といった話にはあまり興味が湧かない私にとっては、大好きな作風ではなかった。しかし、幼い頃か、せめてその頃の記憶をまだ割と覚えている20代の頃までに観ていたら、そして、今回がそれ以来の再観賞だったら、懐かしさも手伝ってより楽しめただろうとは思う。スピルバーグの『インディ・ジョーンズ』シリーズが好きな方には楽しめる作品ではないだろうか。

ティム・バートンが監督した、1989年公開作の映画『バットマン』を初観賞したのは２年前。古いが評価の高い作品だったので期待していたのだが、どうしても同時期に観たクリストファー・ノーランの2008年公開作『ダークナイト』と比べてしまい、私にとってはまあまあの作品でしかなかった。『グーニーズ』も古いけど評価が高い作品だが、私にとってはまあまあの作品。娯楽大作は、公開時の時代を反映しているので機会があればなるべく早く観ておいた方がいいだろう。

Unhinged

In June 2021, I watched the movie Unhinged for the first time at Movix Kameria. The action thriller film was released in 2020. The lead is Russell Crowe.

The story follows a man who lost his job, divorced, has not cared about life and starts persistently to pursue a woman and her son after the woman has offended the man.

The man driving his car is waiting for the traffic light to change in a daze and he does not notice the light turning green, so the car's driver just behind his car lays on the horn when the man gets furious. That happens sometimes. The man, however, chases the car and catch up with it when he asks the driver Rachel to apologize. That is a bad time, for she just made a fatal mistake in her job. Women never make an apology when they are irritating, so she does not. As for the man, he has completely forgotten about the spirit of ladies first maybe because he has lost his job, has been left by his ex-wife and has despaired. As a result, a horrible car chase starts. Although the tailgating driver never appears in the pictures of the movie Duel directed by Steven Spielberg, which caused a feeling of fear quite much, yet I was really terrified by the rage of the big man like a bear played by Crowe.

The Oceanian actor was still slender in his early thirties and he gradually gained weight from his late thirties. Then he was completely different from what he used to be in The Mummy released in 2017, so I was not surprised by how fleshy he was in the 2020 movie. Crowe gave a ghastly performance that horrified me. Caren Pistorius played well as Rachel who is chased and attacked by the man. She is a habitual latecomer and looks demanding, so I could not easily sympathize with her, all the same, I felt sorry for her when she is feeling that her life is in danger desperately running from the man without the help of the police. Besides, it is terrible that a person is murdered just because of laying on the horn.

The fight scenes are quite tense, yet the highlights are the car action. It was good that I could watch it at a theater. 

アオラレ

2021年6月、Movix亀有にて『アオラレ』を初観覧。2020年公開のアクション・スリラー映画。ラッセル・クロウ主演。

失業や離婚で自暴自棄になった男を怒らせた女レイチェルとその息子が、その男に執拗に追い回されるお話。

信号待ちしていたその男が、ボーッとしていて信号が青になった事に気付かず、すぐに後ろの車からキツめにクラクションを鳴らされ、その事に激怒するのだが、そんな事はよくある話だ。だが、彼は、クラクションを鳴らしたその車を追い詰めて、その運転手のレイチェルに謝罪を求める。だが、間が悪い事に、レイチェルは仕事で取り返しのつかない失敗をした直後だった。イライラしている女性が謝る筈がない。そして、その男にも、失業で女房に去られたせいか、レディ・ファーストの精神は皆無だった。その後、地獄のような追いかけっこが始まる。スティーヴン・スピルバーグ監督作の『激突！』では、あおり運転をする運転手の姿は見えず、それが逆に怖さを倍増させていたが、本作での、ラッセル・クロウ演じる熊の様な大男のサイコ野郎の怒り狂った姿は、ホントに怖かった。

30代前半はまだ痩せていたが、30代後半から徐々に太り出したクロウ。そして、2017年公開の『ザ・マミー／呪われた砂漠の王女』に出演している彼は、私が知っていた彼とは全く違っていた。そのおかげで、本作での彼の容貌に驚きは無かったが、彼の鬼気迫った演技は凄まじく恐ろしかった。

その男に付け狙われた被害者の女性レイチェルをカレン・ピストリアスが好演。レイチェルは、遅刻魔だし、性格もキツそうであまり同情できるタイプではないが、それでも、警察からの助けも無く、命の危険を感じながらその男から必死に逃げる様は可哀そうだった。そもそも、クラクションを感じ悪く鳴らしただけで殺されるのはひど過ぎる話だし。

格闘シーンも緊迫感が溢れていたが、何と言ってもカー・アクションが凄かった。映画館で観ておいて良かったと思う。

Lethal Weapon

Last month, I watched the action film Lethal Weapon for the first time on my television set. It was released in 1987 and it stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.

I do not like the Mad Max series starring Mel Gibson, so I had not watched many of his movies until I did Ransom two months ago. The 1996 movie was fun, then I did The Expendables 3 in which I was fascinated by the presence of him. As a result, I finally got interested in the popular Lethal Weapon series. The first installment of it was more enjoyable than I had expected.

Mel Gibson gave a wonderful performance as Sergeant Riggs who is a tough and amusing man but does not care about his life because he has never been able to forget a sad memory. Riggs reminded me of the unusual Inspector Harry Callahan dubbed Dirty Harry, Rambo who returned from Vietnam and madness that the diminutive Al Pacino embodied in Scarface. Danny Glover played an old sergeant who is the partner of Riggs. I first watched Glover in Shooter when I was not so impressed with him and I just thought that he resembles Sidney Poitier. However, he gave a superb performance as Sergeant Murtaugh. The buddy film follows the two sergeant.

Sergeants Riggs and Murtaugh confront a drug trafficking organization in it. Both of them never give up on getting the criminals to the end helping and getting exhausted each other.

The two leads' combination, dialogue and action are highly delightful until the end in the entertaining film.

リーサル・ウェポン

先月、『リーサル・ウェポン』をTV画面にて初観賞。1987年公開のアクション映画。メル・ギブソンとダニー・グローヴァーがW主演。

メル・ギブソン主演の『マッド・マックス』シリーズがあまり好きではないので彼の出演作品はあまり観てこなかったのだが、本作の前に観た『身代金』が割と面白かったり、『エクスペンダブルズ３』に出ていた彼の存在感に魅せられたりした為、その後、人気の高い『リーサル・ウェポン』シリーズに興味が湧いた。そして、本作は予想以上に面白かった。

型破りなダーティ・ハリーことハリー・キャラハン刑事、ベトナム帰りのランボー、そして、『スカーフェイス』で小柄なアル・パチーノが体現した狂気を連想させる、愉快でタフだが、過去の悲しい出来事に囚われて自暴自棄になっているリッグス刑事を、メル・ギブソンが好演。リッグスの相棒の先輩刑事マータフを演じているのはダニー・グローヴァー。彼を初めて見たのは『ザ・シューター／極大射程』。その時は、シドニー・ポワチエみたいだなと思ったくらいでそれほど印象に残らなかったが、本作ではマータフ刑事役を好演している。その二人の刑事のバディ物。

本作でリッグスとマータフが立ち向かうのはある麻薬密売組織。二人は、助け合いながら、ボロボロになりながら、最後まで諦めずに犯人たちを追い詰めていく。

二人の掛け合いやコンビネーション、アクションが最後まで痛快な娯楽作品。

Space Cowboys

The other day, I watched Space Cowboys for the second time on my television set. The adventure drama film is released in 2000. It is directed and written by Clint Eastwood.

The story follows four men who had not become astronauts when they were young. The quartet had already retired but they are asked by NASA to deal with a broken satellite, so they finally become astronauts and struggle to succeed the mission.  

Clint Eastwood played Frank, the leading light of the four men. Then Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner played Hawk, Jerry and Tank respectively. Frank and Hawk are both stubborn and poor losers. They sometimes make cutting jokes each other, which is amusing. Sutherland played a womanizer that Eastwood tended to play those days. I felt that he was not cut for the role. As for Garner, I had hardly watched movies that he is in. He looked simple but he gave a masterfully restrained performance in it. The four old astronauts trust and sympathize each other. Their strong tie is heartwarming and highly delightful to the end. I especially like the scene toward the ending, in which Jerry says, "We're a team, Frank!"

James Cromwell gave a good performance as the crafty Bob Gerson who used to be the four men's superior and become their one after they have started to work for NASA.

The excellent movie casually describes the contrast between how snobbish Gerson is and how the space cowboys live refreshingly until the last.

スペース カウボーイ

先日、『スペース カウボーイ』をTVにて再観賞。2000年公開の冒険ドラマ映画。クリント・イーストウッド主演・監督作。

若かりし頃、宇宙飛行士になり損ねた４人組が、引退して余生を過ごしていた時にNASAから故障した人工衛星を処理する依頼を引き受けることになり、ついに念願だった宇宙飛行士となってそのミッションの為に奮闘する物語。

その４人組のリーダー格フランクを演じるのがイーストウッド。その他の３人、ホーク、ジェリー、タンクを、トミー・リー・ジョーンズ、ドナルド・サザーランド、ジェームズ・ガーナーがそれぞれ演じている。負けず嫌いで頑固な二人、フランクとホークのキツイ冗談の言い合いが愉快だ。そして、当時のイーストウッドが演じがちだった女たらしの役を本作ではサザーランドが担当しているが、彼にはその役が合っていない気がした。ガーナーに関しては、彼が出演した映画をあまり観ていないが、本作では、地味だが渋い演技が光っていた。そんな４人の、お互いを信頼し合い、お互いを思いやっている関係やその強い絆が、最後まで痛快で微笑ましかった。終盤でジェリーが「俺たちはチームだ」と言う瞬間が、特に好きだ。

その４人の元上司で、彼らが現役復帰した時もまた上司となる老獪なガーソンを、ジェームズ・クロムウェルが好演。

そのガーソンの俗物ぶりと４人の男たちの清々しい生き様のコントラストが、最後までさりげなく描かれている秀作。

Patriot Games

The other day, I watched the movie Patriot Games. The action film was released in 1992. It was based on Tom Clancy's novel with the same title. The lead is Harrison Ford.

The story follows Jack Ryan, a former CIA analyst, who and whose families Sean Miller, an IRA member, persistently assaults in order to avenge his little brother's death because Ryan had killed his brother.

I had watched it a few times years ago. The computers, which the characters use in it, had looked advanced when it was released, however, I felt nostalgia for and laughed at how dated the computers are, especially the bulky shape of them. Then watching Sean Bean as Sean Miller, I remembered that I had felt déjà vu when I saw James McAvoy playing the lead character in the movie It Chapter Two. I felt that the two actors looked very similar and I thought that they must be a father and his son, so I checked them on the internet. They actually are an English and a Scot respectively. They are not even related. I was kind of disappointed at the fact that they resemble each other merely because both of them were born in the United Kingdom. I was caring about such things that have nothing to do with the story watching the movie partly because I had done it several times already.

The movie is good as an action. In the Jack Ryan movie series in the 1990s, I prefer The Hunt for Red October to it but I like it better than Clear and Present Danger. The three movies are nearly equal in terms of the fun, though. I think that Alec Baldwin is the most proper Jack Ryan actor because of his sophisticated air among the ones including Ben Affleck in The Sum of All Fears released in 2002.

Harrison Ford looks cooler as a fighting man, such as Han Solo and Deckard in Blade Runner, than as Ryan in it. I associated Ford playing well as the president of the United States, who fights against the terrorists in the jet plane, in Air Force One with Ford as Ryan fighting the IRA members toward the end of it. I got only a feeling of strangeness when I watched Ford as Ryan in suit sitting in front of his personal computer in the sequel, Clear and Present Danger, though that is based on my selfish idea of wishing Ford to always play rough. Sadly, Ford did not look as good as Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Expendables 3. It could not be helped because of the differences among their muscles.

パトリオット・ゲーム

先日、『パトリオット・ゲーム』をTV観賞した。1992年公開のアクション映画。原作はトム・クランシーの小説『愛国者のゲーム』。ハリソン・フォード主演。

元CIA分析官ジャック・ライアンが、IRAのメンバーであるショーン・ミラーから、ミラーの弟の仇として家族もろとも執念深く付け狙われるお話。

昔、何度か観賞。当時は最新に感じたPCが、今回は古臭く見えて、特にその大きさに懐かしさを感じつつ笑ってしまった。そして、ショーン・ミラーを演じるショーン・ビーンを観ながら、『IT／イット THE END ”それ”が見えたら、終わり。』の主人公役の俳優、ジェームズ・マカヴォイに対して既視感を覚えていた事を思い出した。二人は雰囲気がとてもよく似ている。親子かもなと思って調べてみたところ、それぞれイングランド人とスコットランド人。赤の他人だった。同じ英国人だから似ているというだけ、という事実に少しがっかりした。今回は、既に本作を何度が観ていた」ので、こういうどうでもいい、物語とは全く関係の無い事が気になる観賞となった。

作品としてはまあまあのアクション映画。1990年代のジャック・ライアン・シリーズの映画の中では、前作の『レッド・オクトーバーを追え！』の方が好みだが、次作の『今そこにある危機』よりは好きだ。ただ、３作品とも面白さにそれ程の差は無い。ジャック・ライアン役の俳優に関しては、2002年公開の『トータル・フィアーズ』のベン・アフレックを含めても、CIA分析官として一番適役なのは、洗練された雰囲気を放っているアレック・ボールドウィンだと思う。

本作でジャック・ライアンを演じたハリソン・フォードは、ハン・ソロや『ブレードランナー』のデッカードのような闘う男がよく似合う。本作の終盤でIRAのテロリストと闘う彼の姿は、『エアフォース・ワン』にてテロリストと格闘する大統領役を好演した時の彼を連想したが、次作の『今そこにある危機』でのスーツ姿でパソコンを使う彼の姿には違和感しか無かった。もちろん、これは、彼には常にラフであってほしいと願う私の彼への勝手なイメージだ。また、『エクスペンダブルズ３』に出演していた彼は、残念ながら、スタローンやシュワルツェネッガーより見劣りしていた。筋肉量の差は如何ともし難い。

Ted & Ted 2

The other day, I watched Ted and Ted 2 on DVD. The two movies are comedies and were released in 2012 and 2015 respectively. The leads are Mark Wahlberg and a CGI teddy bear. The teddy bear is called Ted. The voice actor is Seth MacFarlane who made his debut as a director and screenwriter in Ted.

The story follows a friendship between the protagonists, John and Ted. The second one is a staffed bear which John's parents gave as a Christmas present to the little John, and which came to have a mind, somehow.

Around the beginning, I thought that a teddy bear cannot have a mind, that I can accept it if the movie is animated, that the live-action film Christopher Robin is narrowly acceptable because it is a sequel to the Disney animated movie Winnie-the-Pooh, and so on, however, I came to disregard such theoretical thoughts and gradually be attracted to the looks and moves of the lovely Ted. Mark Wahlberg also gave a good performance as Ted's best friend, John.

In Ted, John's girlfriend Lori gets jealous of an excessive friendship between John and Ted. Mila Kunis played well as Lori.

In Ted 2, Ted gets involved in a controversy about whether he is property or a person. Honestly, I could not think about the controversy because it was based on the premise that the teddy bear had a mind, which was impossible in the real world. If I have to say something, I think that Ted can be recognized as a person because he can speak a language. In Japan, pets are legally property, so the pet owners must be intrigued by the controversy.

Both of the movies are rich in black humor and really funny comedies which can amuse adults. Especially, I felt really amused by the scene where Ted and John are ridiculing a jogger on the street and throwing apples at the guy from the rooftop. At that time, I wanted to join them and throw ones at him. 

テッド ＆ テッド２

先日、『テッド』と『テッド２』をDVDにて観賞。それぞれ2012年と2015年に公開されたコメディ映画。主演はCGIのぬいぐるみとマーク・ウォールバーグ。そのぬいぐるみの名前がテッドで、その声優がセス・マクファーレン。『テッド』はマクファーレンの監督・脚本デビュー作でもある。

主人公のジョンと、彼が子供の頃に両親からプレゼントされた、そして、なぜか魂が宿ってしまったぬいぐるみ、テッドとの友情物語。

観始めは、ぬいぐるみに魂が宿るわけがない、とか、アニメなら許せる設定だけどな、とか、実写の『プーと大人になった僕』はディズニーアニメ『くまのプーさん』の続編だし、とか色々思ったが、徐々にテッドの愛らしいルックスとその動きに惹きつけられて、そういう理屈とかどうでもよくなっていった。テッドの親友ジョンをマーク・ウォールバーグが好演。

『テッド』は、ジョンの彼女、ロリーが、テッドとジョンの仲の良さに嫉妬するお話。ミラ・キュニスがロリー役を好演。

『テッド２』は、テッドが「人」か、それとも、「物」か、という議論が巻き起こるお話。その議論自体は、ぬいぐるみに魂が宿っていることが前提になっているので、その前提が現実社会ではあり得ない事象である以上、正直、真面目に考える気にもなれない。強いて言うなら、人の言葉を話せるのだから、テッドは「人」として認められてもいいのではないかと思う。日本では、法的にはペットは「物」なので、ペットを持つ方々にとっては、興味深い議論であるだろう。

両作とも、ブラックユーモアに満ち溢れた、とても面白い、大人が楽しめるコメディ。特に、『テッド２』で、ジョンとテッドたちが屋上から下の通りを走るジョガーめがけて林檎を投げつける場面が痛快で、一緒にやりたいなと思ってしまった。

Eighth Grade

In September 2019, I watched the movie Eighth Grade for the first time at Human Trust Cinema Yurakucho. The other day, I did it again on DVD. The coming-of-age drama film was released in 2018. Elsie Fisher starred for the first time in the movie. It is also Bo Burnham's debut work as a film director.

It follows a middle school girl named Kayla in the United States.

Kayla is shy and a poor talker. She is shocked when she is voted "Most Quiet" by her classmates in the middle school. She is an uncool girl who can be anywhere. She wants to be friends with her cool classmates and tries to talk to them hard, all the same, they dismiss her. She lives with her single father, Mark. He likes to chat with her during meals, however, she is quite into her smart phone and will not let go of it. When he tries to talk to her, she will not stop looking at her phone and tells him not to annoy her. The story describes Kayla's usual days in a detached manner until her graduation from the school. The funniest scene for me was when she is trying to eat a banana that she actually hates. The most heartbreaking scene was when she looks embarrassed wearing a swimsuit because of her plump figure and appears in a pool party filled with her slender classmates. Although various things happens, yet she grows gradually and steadily without losing herself under the benevolent watch of her gentle father. How Kayla glows is admirable and really lovable.

The main character is not popular in the school, so the movie is very realistic as well as Booksmart. I want such realistic movies to increase because in fact, ordinary students are the majority in schools. Basically, I like good coming-of-age dramas in which popular students are the main characters, though I have kind of lost my interest in a romance between a beautiful girl and a handsome boy because it has looked ordinary.

Honestly, I was puzzled a little by the very realistic protagonist when I watched the movie for the first time. After that, however, I watched good ones like Booksmart, Lady Bird and Frances Ha, whose heroines are all true-to-life, and I got used to realistic descriptions of women, so I felt Kayla lovelier than the last time and shed a tear when I did it for the second time.

The film is fantastic and stars the former child actor Elsie Fisher whose performances far outshine the other actors.

エイス・グレード

2019年９月、ヒューマントラストシネマ有楽町にて『エイス・グレード 世界で一番クールな私へ』を初観覧。そして、先日、DVDにて再観賞。2018年公開の青春映画。エルシー・フィッシャーの初主演作で、ボー・バーナムの監督デビュー作でもある。

アメリカの中学２年生の女の子、ケイラの成長記。

ケイラは内気で口下手な女の子。学校で、「最も無口な女の子」に選ばれてしまってショックを受ける、どこにでもいそうなイケてない女の子。クラスのイケてる女の子たちと仲良くなりたくて彼女たちに一所懸命話しかけるが、全く相手にされない。家では父マークと二人暮らし。食事中でさえスマホを手放さないケイラ。そんな娘と話をしたいマーク。でも、スマホに夢中なケイラは話しかけてくるマークをウザがる。そんなケイラの日常が彼女の中学卒業まで淡々と描かれている。可笑しかったのは、彼女が苦手なバナナを食べようとする場面。いじらしかったのは、ポッチャリ体系の彼女が、痩せている友だちが大勢いるプールパーティに、水着姿で恥ずかしそうに現れる場面。様々な事が起きるが、ケイラは、優しい父に見守られながら、自分を見失う事無く少しずつ着実に成長する。そんな彼女の健気な姿がとても愛らしい。

『ブックスマート』同様、主人公がクラスの人気者ではないので、とてもリアルなドラマに仕上がっている。クラスの人気者が主役の青春ドラマも悪くはないが、学校なんて、目立たない地味な学生の方が多いのだから、今後も、こんな作品が増えてほしいと思う。美男美女の学生カップルの恋愛なんてありきたりだし。

初観賞時、正直、リアルすぎる主人公に戸惑った。だが、その後、等身大の女性が主人公の『ブックスマート』『レディ・バード』『フランシス・ハ』といった良作の観賞を通して女性のリアルな描写に慣れたせいか、本作の再観賞時は、前回よりケイラをより愛おしく感じて、涙が零れた。

元子役のエルシー・フィッシャーの堅実な演技が光る秀作。

Harry Potter Part I to IV

Tenet is the first movie in which I saw Robert Pattinson. I was really impressed with how sophisticated he was in it and I tweeted about it some days later. Then one of my followers replied to me that he appears in a Harry Potter movie. Speaking of Harry Potter, Emma Watson does, too. Beauty and the Beast is the first movie in which I saw her. Before I watched it, I had heard from a girl co-worker of mine that Watson was one of the most beautiful women in the world, however, I thought of her as just beautiful when I watched her in it, so I told the co-worker so some days later. She then got irritated and told me not to say so without watching Happy Potter. I recalled it and I felt that time had come to watch the popular series, which I had somehow refrained from doing it, so I started to do it in order.

I at first watched Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets and Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban on DVD. Although I had heard that Hermione played by Emma Watson was an honor student, yet she was so scary that it made me laugh. I also thought that the little Watson was not so cute, unlike the little Dakota and Elle Fanning. Moreover, I associated the owls as messengers and the moving stairs at the Hogwarts School with the crows and something in Damon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, so I felt that Harry Potter and Damon Slayer have much in common.

Then I finally watched Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire in which Robert Pattinson appears. He seemed to be a novice actor and had less dignity than Daniel Radcliffe who is younger but had already been starred in three movies, though Pattinson became one of the world's highest-paid actors when he starred in The Twilight Saga film series. Radcliffe became quite famous in his early teens. Pattinson has been a big star now. The comparison of the two actors is really interesting. As for Emma Watson, she was no longer immature. She was pretty especially wearing a dress in the dance party, so I understood the emotional attachment of Watson's longtime fans, who had watched her since her debut, and I started to see Watson in a new light.

The Harry Potter films are based on the novels of J. K. Rowling, an English author. Those ones follow the main character, Harry Potter, and his best friends, Ron and Hermione, and they describe how the young trio grow as sorcerers through confronting the villains. I feel uncomfortable with male sorcerers, so I did not love the four films so much. All the same, the blockbusters were worth watching and entertained me as fantasies. 

ハリー・ポッター 第１作～第４作

ロバート・パティンソンを初めて観た映画は『TENET テネット』。その洗練された雰囲気に魅了され、観覧後にその事をツイートしたところ、彼が『ハリー・ポッター』に出演していた事を私のフォロワーさんが教えてくれた。『ハリー・ポッター』と言えば、エマ・ワトソンも出演している。彼女を初めて観たのは『美女と野獣』。事前に、ワトソン好きの職場の若い同僚から彼女は世界的な美女だと聞いていたのだが、その観賞時は、そこまでの美人だとは感じられず、観賞後、その同僚にその事を正直に話したところ、気分を害した様子で「『ハリー・ポッター』も観てないくせに」と冷たく言い放たれた。そんな事を思い出して、それまで何となく敬遠していた、その人気シリーズを観る時が来たと感じ、一作目から順に観始めた。

まず、『ハリー・ポッターと賢者の石』、『秘密の部屋』、『アズカバンの囚人』をDVDにて観賞。優等生だと聞いていた、エマ・ワトソン演じるハーマイオニーのおっかなさが可笑しかった。ただ、幼いワトソンは、ファニング姉妹の幼い頃と比べると、それほど可愛いとは感じなかった。また、伝達手段であるフクロウや、ホグワーツ校の動く階段を観ながら、『鬼滅の刃』のカラス等を連想して、２作品は共通点が多いなと感じたりした。

そして、ロバート・パティンソンが出ている、シリーズ４作目の『炎のゴブレット』を観賞。出演していたパティンソンはまだ駆け出しの俳優という感じで、既に３作品で主演を張っていた年下のダニエル・ラドクリフに貫録負けしていた。だが、その後、彼は『トワイライト』シリーズにて破格の出演料を手にする俳優になっている。若くしてスターになったラドクリフと現在大人気のパティンソン。二人の対比が興味深かった。エマ・ワトソンはと言えば、幼さが無くなり、綺麗になっていた。特に劇中のパーティにおけるドレス姿は美しかった。デビューから彼女の成長を見守っている彼女のファンの、彼女への思い入れも理解出来たし、私の彼女を見る目も変わってきた。

『ハリー・ポッター』シリーズは、英国人作家、J・K・ローリングの同名小説が原作。主人公の少年ハリー・ポッターと彼の親友のロンとハーマイオニーの３人組が、悪と対峙しながら魔法使いとして成長する物語。男の魔法使いに違和感を覚える為、すごく好きな作品ではないが、ファンタジー映画としてはとても観応えがある娯楽大作だ。

Tenet

In September 2020, the movie Tenet was released. I watched the hit film twice in the same year at theaters.

The story follows the protagonist who is paired with a mysterious guy named Neil and struggles to save a woman and the world from the villain.

Although I do not like time travel stories, yet I thought that I should have watched the film because of the reputation and the intriguing preview. I beforehand watched the first and second installment of Back to the Future, which I had avoid watching for a long time because they have time travel stories, in preparation to do Tenet.

When I firstly did the hit film, I gave up understanding the difficult time inversion scenes and the time-series far more complicated than Back to the Future before the middle but I could at least enjoy watching it from the start to the end because of the wonderful pictures. That was the second movie starring John David Washington that I had ever watched following BlacKkKlansman. He was not more glamourous than his father, Denzel Washington, but he had presence, which impressed me. I was also stricken by how sophisticated Robert Pattinson appeared and how beautiful the blonde tall Elizabeth Debicki looked. I watched both of them for the first time. Then I felt that the three actors gave a wonderful performance.

When I secondly did it, I could not understand the intricate time-series so much, so I just enjoyed watching the fantastic screen images again. I was also impressed with the playing of the two veteran actors, Michael Caine appearing for a short time and Kenneth Branagh playing the villain, in addition to the above three actors. I was especially stricken by a superb performance that Robert Pattinson gave as Neil who has what he wants to say but has to hide it feeling painful and looking cool to the end.

Honestly, I do not badly want to understand the time inversion scenes. I would be able to naturally do them as I repeatedly watch them. Anyway, I want to enjoy how I do them. It seems that I will have a long-term relationship with the movie as well as Blade Runner.

The last scene looks like the one of Casablanca. The entertaining blockbuster is filled with various elements.

TENET テネット

2020年９月に公開された話題作『TENET テネット』を、同年に２回劇場観覧した。

主人公の男が謎の男ニールと組んで、悪党から世界とある女性を救うために奮闘する物語。

タイムトラベル物は好きではないのだが、面白そうな予告編や評判から、本作は観ておくべきだと思い、まず、長年敬遠していた同じタイムトラベル物である『バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー』のパート１と２を予習も兼ねて観覧前にDVDにて観賞した。

１回目の観覧では、『BTTF』よりもはるかに複雑な時系列や「時間の逆行」の難解さに、早々に理解するのを放棄し、ひたすらその素晴らしい映像を楽しんだ。主演のジョン・デヴィッド・ワシントンを観るのは『ブラック・クランズマン』に続いて２回目。父親のデンゼル・ワシントンほどの華は無いが、その存在感に魅せられた。目を見張ったのは、初めて観るロバート・パティンソンの洗練された雰囲気と、同じく初めて観る金髪で長身のエリザベス・デビッキの美しさ。３人とも、演技も素晴らしかった。

２回目の観覧でも、その時系列を理解することは出来ず、その素晴らしい映像をただただ堪能した。そして、ベテラン俳優の２人、出番少な目のマイケル・ケインと悪役のケネス・ブラナーと、前述の３人の役者の演技を楽しんだ。特に、今回も、言いたいことを言えないもどかしさをおくびにも出さず、最後までクールに演じきったロバート・パティンソンの演技に魅せられた。

「時間の逆行」のシーンは、正直、積極的に理解する気はない。何度か観れば自然と理解出来るだろう。その過程を楽しもうと思う。『ブレード・ランナー』同様、長い付き合いになりそうな作品だ。

ラストが『カサブランカ』みたいだった。色んな要素が詰まった超娯楽大作。

La La Land

In April 2019, I watched the musical La La Land for the first time at Kinema Junpo Theater. I was really moved by the serious and sophisticated movie, yet the optimistic musical The Greatest Showman, which I watched one week later, was quite amusing, moreover, its music was too fantastic to remember how moved I had been by La La Land, though I thought that I would watch it again someday in a relaxed mood every time I saw the movie title on the internet. Then, in January 2021, I finally watched it at Marunouchi Piccadilly, a theater in Tokyo, again.

The film follows a young man and a young woman. The man is a jazz pianist. The woman goes for an actress. They are drawn to each other and encourage themselves to chase their respective dreams.

The young man and woman firstly meet in a traffic jam when they have ill feelings against each other. They meet again when Mia has a bad feeling against Seb but she was at least attracted by his piano performance. After that, they encounter in a party when they gradually become friends and finally start to date with each other. They also encourage themselves to make their respective dreams come true.

At the beginning, Mia looks unappealing, so I suspected that Emma Stone playing Mia had become unattractive before I knew it. She, however, gets increasingly pretty as she becomes friends and starts to date with Seb. I was really impressed by how she gets attractive falling in love with him. I thought that Ryan Gosling also gave a wonderful performance as Seb, all the same, I felt that Stone's performance was more fantastic.

I was most impressed with the scene where Mia gazes at Seb who is playing the keyboard instrument with a vague smile as a member of his old friend's band in a concert. In fact, I shed tears when I watched it for the second time. I then felt as if the two characters in the scene were asking me whether I live true to myself. 

ラ・ラ・ランド

2019年４月、キネマ旬報シアターにて、ミュージカル映画『ラ・ラ・ランド』を初観覧。リアルでシリアスな物語と洗練された作りに感動した。ただ、その一週間後に観覧した、楽天的なミュージカル『グレイテスト・ショーマン』が楽しすぎて、そして、その楽曲が素晴らしすぎて、本作の感動は薄れてしまっていった。だが、ネット上で本作のタイトルを目にするたびに、いつかまたゆっくり観賞しようと思ってはいた。そして、2021年１月、満を持して、丸の内ピカデリーにて再観覧した。

ジャズ・ピアニストのセブと女優志望のミアが、惹かれ合いながら、励まし合いながら、それぞれの夢を追いかける物語。

その若い二人は、まず、交通渋滞の中で出会った。その時の印象は、お互いあまりよくなくて、その後の再会の時もそうだった。だが、その再会時、ミアは、セブのピアノ演奏には惹かれていた。そして、その後も、またあるパーティで再会。それから、二人の距離は徐々に縮まり、いつしか、恋人同士になり、お互いの夢を応援することとなった。

ミアを演じているのは、エマ・ストーン。ストーンってこんなにブスだったっけと感じる程、序盤のミアは魅力的ではないが、セブと仲良くなり恋仲になっていくにつれて、彼女はどんどん可愛らしくなっていく。恋をして綺麗になっていくミアには本当に魅せられた。セブ役のライアン・ゴズリングも好演していたが、ミアを演じたストーンの方が光って見えた。

一番印象に残ったのは、旧友のバンドに加わって、コンサートで何とも言えない笑みを浮かべながら演奏しているセブを、ミアが見つめるシーン。その二人に、自分に嘘をついていないか問われた気がして、２回目の観賞時は、涙が零れた。

The Back to the Future Trilogy

In fall 2020, I watched the Back to the Future trilogy on TV for the first time. I do not like time travel stories, so I had not watched the trilogy for a long time. I, however, came to want to watch Tenet, a time travel movie, when the movie was just released and it seemed intrigued. At the same time, I finally got interested in the Back to the Future series because watching the old time travel movies was good for preparation to watch the new one. Thus, I started to watch the trilogy.

The stories follow a high school boy named Marty and an old man called Doc, who is a scientist and a best friend of Marty. Marty gets in the time-traveling machine built by Doc and goes to the past and the future. Michael J. Fox as Marty and Christopher Lloyd as Doc are a good combination.

The first installment of the trilogy was released in 1985. It is set in California. Marty gets into the time-traveling automobile and is accidentally sent from 1985 to 1955 where he meets his young father and mother who have not married yet. Marty's teenage mother played by Lea Thompson especially looked really charming. I also was interested in the scene where Marty is singing "Johnny B. Goode" playing the guitar on a stage when a member of the band call a person appearing to be Chuck Berry in order to make the person listen to Marty's performance. If the scene was filmed today, it would cause a controversy about white supremacism.

The second installment was released in 1989. Marty, Doc and Marty's girlfriend go from 1985 to 2015. I had to watch it before 2015. I laughed at bulky television sets and fax machines. Then I gave up understanding the complicated time-series after the middle, so I thought at that time that I would never understand the seemingly more complex time-series in Tenet, which I planned to watch in several days.

The third was done in 1990. Marty returned to 1955 in Part II. He goes from 1955 to 1855. I laughed at the diminutive Marty calling himself Clint Eastwood, who is far taller and used to be a Spaghetti Western star.

I had not been a fan of Michael J. Fox but I could understand why the small actor had been quite popular thanks to the trilogy full of the charm of him.

2020年秋、『バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー』３部作をTVにて初観賞。タイムトラベル物はあまり好きではない為、ずっと観る気になれなかったのだが、同じくタイムトラベル物で、当時公開されたばかりの『TENET テネット』がとても面白そうで観覧したくもなり、同時に、タイムトラベルつながりで『BTTF』にもようやく興味が湧き、『テネット』の予習も兼ねて観ることにした。

高校生のマーティが、かなり年上で科学者でもある、彼の親友ドクが発明したタイムマシンに乗って、過去や未来に行くお話。マーティ役はマイケル・J・フォックスでドク役はクリストファー・ロイド。名コンビだ。

１作目の公開は1985年。舞台も1985年のアメリカで、マーティがタイムマシンで30年前の1955年に行ってしまい、そこで、まだ結婚前の若い彼の父や母ロレインに出会ってしまう。このロレイン役のリー・トンプソンがとても愛らしい。気になった場面は、マーティがステージでチャック・ベリーの「ジョニー・Ｂ・グッド」を演奏していた時、それを観ていたバンドメンバーがチャック・ベリーらしき人物に電話を通じてそれを聴かせていたシーン。今だったら、白人至上主義と騒がれることだろう。

２作目の公開は1989年。1985年から2015年にタイムトラベル。2015年以前に観るべきだった物語。ファックスと分厚いテレビに笑ってしまった。また、複雑すぎる時系列を理解するのを早々にあきらめてしまい、この調子ではその数日後に観覧するつもりだった『テネット』は絶対に理解できないだろうと思った。

３作目は1990年公開。前作の後半で戻った1955年から1855年にタイムトラベル。小柄なマーティが、マカロニウエスタンのスター俳優でもあった、長身のクリント・イーストウッドの名を騙っていた事に笑ってしまった。

３作ともマイケル・J・フォックスの魅力満載で、彼のファンではなかったが、彼の人気の秘密が分かった気がした。
