The King's Man

In January 2022, I watched The King's Man at Movix Kameari for the first time. The spy action film starring Ralph Fiennes was released in 2021 and is a prequel to the first and second installments starring Taron Egerton and Colin Firth in the Kingsman series.

It follows the story of Orland Oxford who is a former serviceman, a British aristocrat, a duke and performed by Ralph Fiennes. The Duke of Oxford commits espionage himself in order to resolve the problems of the world behind World War I and then the duke starts a private spy organization named Kingsman that does not belong to a nation.

I like Ralph Fiennes because the actor gave wonderful performances as the villains to gentlemen such as a Shutzstaffel officer who the war has made kind of go mad in Schindler's List, a serial killer in Red Dragon, a horrible wizard in the Harry Potter series, a politician in Made in Manhattan and a British diplomat in The Constant Gardener. In some years Fiennes has also acted well as gentlemen who was supporting with a presence in No Time to Die and Official Secrets, so I was kind of surprised by his fighting scenes where he drove himself in his latest movie. He also seemed to run wild so as to compete with Liam Neeson and Harrison Ford who look like him and are good in action. He could have kept safely acting a gentleman without danger because he was fully mature, however, I felt that he would just have wanted to drive himself. Ralph performed well as the duke of Oxford who energetically acts for the world with a sense of mission. His action was wonderful too.

I regretted that the younger actors did not flourish so much compared with the first and second movies in the series. I wanted to watch the acting of Harris Dickinson as Orland's son and Gemma Arterton as the duke's secretary more. Not that I did not like Fiennes' performances. I might have just asked too much or I felt that way because the duo Taron Egerton and Colin Firth acted far more wonderfully in the former two ones.

The flick depicts World War I in a comical manner. I have become interested in Rasputin only whose name I had known since I watched it, though I honestly felt that it was just good. However, I will be intrigued with how the sequel describes events behind World War II if it is filmed

キングスマン：ファースト・エージェント

2022年１月、Movix亀有にて『キングスマン：ファースト・エージェント』を観賞した。2021年公開のスパイ・アクション映画。主演はレイフ・ファインズ。タロン・エガートンとコリン・ファース主演の『キングスマン』の前日譚であり、『キングスマン』シリーズの第３作。

レイフ・ファインズが演じる、従軍経験を持つ英国の名門貴族オーランド・オックスフォード公が、第一次世界大戦下の世界の混乱を収めるべく独自に諜報活動を行い、その後、国家に属さない民間スパイ機関「キングスマン」を発足するお話。

『シンドラーのリスト』の戦争で少しおかしくなったナチ将校、『レッド・ドラゴン』の殺人鬼、そして、『ハリー・ポッター』シリーズの恐ろしい魔法使いといった悪役から、『メイド・イン・マンハッタン』の政治家や『ナイロビの蜂』の外交官といった紳士役まで様々な役柄を好演してきたレイフ・ファインズ。割と好きな俳優さんだ。ここ数年は『007』シリーズや『オフィシャル・シークレット』で脇役だが存在感のある紳士役を好演していたので、本作で体を張ったアクションを披露している彼には少し驚いたし、顔が似ていてアクションもこなすリーアム・ニーソンやハリソン・フォードに対抗心を燃やして暴れまわっているようにも見えた。年齢を考えたら、無難に紳士役を演じていればいいのにとも思ったが、体を動かしたいお方なんだろうな。本作では、使命感を持って世界平和のために精力的に活動するオーランド・オックスフォード公を好演。アクションも素晴らしかった。

残念だったのは、『キングスマン』シリーズの前２作と比べて、若い俳優の活躍が少ない事。オックスフォード公の息子役のハリス・ディキンソンや執事役のジェマ・アタートンの出番をもう少し増やしてほしかった。だからと言って、レイフ・ファインズがつまらなかったわけではない。私が無いものねだりをしているだけなのかもしれないし、それだけ、前２作のタロン・エガートンとコリン・ファースのコンビが素晴らしかったのだと思う。

第一次世界大戦をコミカルに描いていて、また、名前くらいは知っていたラス・プーチンに興味を湧かせてくれた本作。だが、正直、面白さはまあまあだった。次作が製作されるとしたら、第二次世界大戦の裏側がどう描かれるのか興味はある。

Cry Macho

In January 2022, I watched Cry Macho for the first time at Movix Kameari. The drama film was released in 2021 and directed and starred by Clint Eastwood.

It depicts the very later years of a man who is asked by his old friend to take his friend's son living in Mexico to America, goes there alone, finds the boy and travels with him to leave the country. Clint Eastwood acts the elderly man.

When I watched The Mule released in 2018, I was surprised by how old and weak the lead, Eastwood, was, so I felt that the film would be the last one starring him and I hoped that he would retire from acting after that as well as Robert Redford who retired as an actor after The Old Man & the Gun released in the same year because I liked him when he looked to be strong. Eastwood directed the 2010 movie Richard Jewell but did not act in it. I wanted him to keep focusing only on direction because the movie was wonderful, so I was surprised by the news that he would star in the 2021 one. To be more frank, I wished that he would have quit acting as a lead after Gran Torino in 2009, for I did not like to see him even in the 2018 one, though only his eyes are lively. All the same, as his fan I thought that I must value his decision to star in his newest one and view it, so I went to the theater.  

Eastwood looked to be livelier than I had expected. He was not muscular any more but he seemed to say that you must be strong-minded even if you lose strength and you could clear the way if you would always do your best even if you have become old and weak in the scenes where the man sleeps soundly when he needs to rest and where he coolly thinks and behaves with no panic. Then I thought that I should stop being apathetic and tending to think that I cannot help it because I am not young anymore and have lost physical strength already. You would better take enough sleep if you are exhausted. You always must focus on what to do whenever you have it because you can think extra things when you are free.　

Although I prefer the relationship between the old man and the Asian boy in Gran Torino, yet the interaction between the elderly man and the boy in Cry Macho made me feel comfortable when the man finds the kid in Mexico and starts to travel with him, moreover, I felt the man to be right and adult seeing the scenes in which he never easily cater to the brat more than necessary. 

I remembered The Bridges of Madison County when I saw the elderly man gets intimate with the female owner of a café. The soaking wet Eastwood in the rain was impressive in the 1992 film, however, the boss coolly talked with the lady in his latest one. It seemed that he told me that I must not flatter with and I only have to show sincerity toward her when you come to really like a woman.

The 2021 flick is great. Some of the scenes in it reminded me of the living legend Clint Eastwood's ones. If the boss want to act a role again, I would like him to show me his way as a man for his age through the role.

クライ・マッチョ

2022年１月、Movix亀有にて『クライ・マッチョ』を初観賞。2021年公開のドラマ映画。クリント・イーストウッド主演・監督作。

イーストウッド演じる老齢の男が、古い友人から、メキシコにいる彼の息子をアメリカに連れ帰ってほしいと頼まれ、メキシコに単身乗り込んでその少年を探し出し、彼と二人でアメリカへの出国を目指してメキシコを旅するお話。

2018年公開作の『運び屋』を観覧した時は、主演していたイーストウッドがすっかり衰えた爺様になっていたのに驚いた。だから、これが彼の最後の主演作になるんだろうな、と思いながら観ていたし、強い男を演じる彼が好きだったので、同年公開作の『さらば愛しきアウトロー』で俳優業を引退したロバート・レッドフォードと同様に、演じるのはその作品で最後にしてほしかった。2019年公開の『リチャード・ジュエル』では出演せず監督業に徹していて、その作品も素晴らしかったので、このまま監督業に徹していてほしいな、と思っていたが、本作で再度主演するというニュースを聞いた時は本当に驚いた。もっと率直に言うと、主演は『グラン・トリノ』を最後にしてほしかったし、『運び屋』での彼の姿は、目はまだ死んでいなかったが、あまり見ていたいものではなかった。しかし、彼が演じる事を決意したのであれば、一ファンとしては見届けるべきだとも思い、『クライ・マッチョ』の観覧に臨んだ。

イーストウッドは、想像していたよりはお元気そうだった。さすがにもう筋骨隆々ではないが、休息が必要な時はしっかり寝るという姿や何が起こっても慌てず冷静に考えて行動する様に、腕力が無くとも心は強く持つべき、体力が落ちてもその時のベストを尽くせば活路は常に見いだせるというメッセージを感じた。そして、若い頃とは体力が格段に落ちてしまい、もうオジサンだから仕方がないと投げやりになりがちな日ごろの自分を改めようと思った。疲れた時はまず十分に睡眠を取ればいい。その時その時でやるべきことに集中して、余計な事は時間がある時に考えればいいのだ。

『グラン・トリノ』でのアジア人の子供との関係性の方が好きだが、メキシコで見つけ出して行動を共にした少年との交流もまた微笑ましかった。必要以上に、安易に子供に迎合しない姿勢も大人の正しい在り方だ。

酒場の女主人との交流では1992年の『マディソン郡の橋』を思い出した。あの作品では彼が土砂降りの中でずぶ濡れになったシーンが印象的だったが、本作における御大の彼女との接し方は粋だった。そして、女性を好きになっても、媚びは売るな、誠意だけはしっかり示せと言われた気がした。

生きる伝説、クリント・イーストウッドの過去の出演作が様々な場面で頭に浮かぶ良作。また演じたい役があったなら、再度、その役を通して年相応の男の流儀を示して頂きたい。

Casino Royale

In October 2020, I watched Casino Royale for the first time on the television set. I have occasionally watched the spy action film released in 2006 since then. It is the first one starring Daniel Craig as James Bond and the twenty-first 007 one.

It follows the activities of James Bond, a MI6 agent, who has just gotten a license to kill.

Daniel Craig's 007 is not frivolous as well as Timothy Dalton's 007 and his 007 is far different about it from Sean Connery's and Roger Moore's who easily get laid, however, his 007 has sexual charms as well as Connery's and Moore's and more than Dalton's. Then I believe that Craig's deserves to have a license to kill more than other actor's. Although Craig is medium height and build for a Westerner, yet his 007 looks to be a real fighter because of his expression, physicality and carriage. I am thrilled by how he just pushes forward to accomplish his missions. I like his Bond with coolness and machismo the most among James Bond actors.

Mads Mikkelsen, who is called a Scandinavian treasure in Japan, appears in it as an enemy. I first watched him in At Eternity's Gate but I was not so impressed by him maybe because of Willem Dafoe's overwhelming presence. I want to watch it again in the near future. I first recognized him when I heard the news that he succeeded to the role of Johnny Depp in the Fantastic Beasts series after Depp was dropped. And I first knew that Japanese fans of him call him Sir Mads. He was as sexy as they say. If I had not viewed the first 007 movie starring Craig, I would have not done Another Round.

Judi Dench acted as M in the 2006 flick following the Pierce Brosnan's 007 ones. Her presence was wonderful. She also charmingly performed the Queen in Victoria & Abdul eleven years later. She has begun to appear in movies in her early fifties and still been a wonderful actor even in her eighties.

007/カジノ・ロワイヤル

2020年10月、『007/カジノ・ロワイヤル』をTV画面にて初観賞。その後も折に触れて観ている2006年公開のスパイ・アクション映画。ダニエル・クレイグが演じるジェームズ・ボンドの第１作。『007』シリーズの21作目。

殺しのライセンスを取得したばかりのMI6のエージェント、ジェームズ・ボンドの活躍が描かれている。

ダニエル・クレイグが演じる007は、堅物っぽかったティモシー・ダルトンと同様にあまり浮ついていない。手あたり次第に女と寝る大昔の007とは大違いだ。ただ、彼はダルトン以上に、そして、ショーン・コネリーやロジャー・ムーアと同じくらい男の色気を漂わせている。そして、歴代のボンド俳優の中で殺しのライセンスに一番ふさわしいのは、ダニエル・クレイグだと思う。欧米人としては中肉中背だが、顔つきや体つき、身のこなしが闘う男だ。任務遂行の為にひたすら邁進する姿にシビれる。落ち着いた雰囲気と男臭さを併せ持つクレイグが、ボンド俳優の中で一番好きだ。

悪役で、日本では「北欧の至宝」と呼ばれている、マッツ・ミケルセンが出演。初めて観た彼が出演している映画は『永遠の門 ゴッホの見た未来』。その時は、ゴッホ役のウィレム・デフォーの存在感が圧倒的だったせいか、あまり印象に残らなかった。近いうちに再観賞したい。そして、初めて彼を認識したのは、『ファンタスティック・ビースト』シリーズを降板したジョニー・デップの代役に抜擢されたニュースを聞いた時。世の女性にマッツ様と呼ばれているのもその時知った。本作でも噂に違わぬセクシーなお方だったし、本作を観賞していなかったら『アナザーラウンド』も観ていなかっただろう。

ピアース・ブロスナンの『007』シリーズからM役で出演しているジュディ・デンチも引き続きMとして出演。さすがの存在感。11年後に主演していた『ヴィクトリア女王 最期の秘密』でも女王様をチャーミングに演じていた。映画に出演し出したのは50歳をすぎてかららしい。80歳を過ぎても変わらず素敵な俳優さんだ。

I Care a Lot

In January 2022, I watched I Care a Lot at Kadokawa Cinema Yurakucho for the first time. The black comedy film was released in 2020.

It depicts a women who deceives wealthy and isolated elderly persons, legally steals their fortunes and gets into a difficult situation because one of them is the close relative of a gang boss.

What a disgusting movie! Most of the characters are wicked. A presiding judge seems to be good but he is a moron, for he was used by the vicious woman. I came to want not to live longer, though I do not have much property which an evil person like her desire to steal.

At the beginning, she asks herself if she is a lion or a lamb. I think that the kind of question is exaggerated whenever I hear it. Firstly, we human beings stand at the top of the ecosystem on earth because we are crafty monkeys. Being cowardly is a means of surviving. I understand a longing for strong wild animals but I cannot seriously think about ultimate questions metaphorically using animals.

The Westerners seem to like metaphorically using lions. English paper wrote the head line "Ten Heroic Lions, One Stupid Boy" a day after England lost mostly due to David Beckham's red card in a soccer World Cup, which became a popular topic. In Angel Has Fallen, moreover, two men performed by Gerard Butler and Danny Huston agree that they are both lions. I prefer tigers and wolves, though. I admire especially a lone wolf with a dignity.

Human beings could be divided into deceivers and dupes. I hate to become each of them but I would be deceived by swindlers in the end if I do. The world is nasty.

Although many people praise the protagonist for eagerly and persistently deceiving the elderly people and fiercely resisting the gangsters' attack as highly delightful, yet I hoped from my heart that she would end up awkwardly dying. Rosamund Pike gave such a wonderful performance that I would feel that way. I wonder how she felt when she acted a completely bad person pretending a good citizen, though. I think the role is deferent from the villain in a hero movie and a psychopath. Dianne Wiest played one of the aged victims. She acted well as an old lady with cuteness and fearfulness in it. She also appeared in The Mule. The veteran actor has been popular even since turning seventy. 

パーフェクト・ケア

2022年１月、角川シネマ有楽町にて、『パーフェクト・ケア』を初観賞。2020年公開のブラック・コメディ映画。

裕福で孤独な老人たちを騙して彼らの財産を合法的に奪い続けていた女が、マフィアのボスの身内に手を出して窮地に追い込まれるお話。

胸くそ悪い映画だった。登場するのはほぼ全員悪党。善人に見えたのは、腹黒い女たちに利用されている間抜けな裁判長のみ。長生きするのが嫌になってくるお話だ。ま、私には彼女のような悪者に狙われるほどの財産は無いが。

冒頭で主人公の悪女が、私はライオンか子羊か、と自問自答している。この手の質問を耳にする度に、毎回、大げさだなと思う。そもそも、我々ヒトはずる賢いサルだったからこの星の生態系の頂点に座っているのだ。卑怯は時に生き延びる手段だ。強い動物に憧れる気持ちは理解できるが、動物を用いる究極の質問に関しては、真面目に考える気にもなれない。

それにしても、欧米人はライオンを比喩に使うのが好きだ。サッカーワールドカップでデイヴィッド・ベッカムがレッドカードで退場になりイングランドが敗退した翌日の、彼の母国の新聞が「ライオンのような勇者たち10人と１人の愚か者」という見出しを打った事が、当時、話題になった。そして、昨年観た『エンド・オブ・ステイツ』では、ジェラルド・バトラーとダニー・ヒューストン演じる男たちが、俺たちはライオンだ、と話していた。私は虎や狼の方が好きだな。特に一匹狼の孤高の姿には憧れる。

人間は騙す側と騙される側に分けられるかもだが、私はどちらにも属したくない。こんな甘えた考え方をしていると詐欺師たちのカモになるのかもしれない。油断大敵な夜の中だ。

主人公の、老人たちを騙す事に執念を燃やす姿やマフィア相手でも一歩も引かない態度を痛快だと絶賛する方々が大勢いるが、私は、彼女には無様に死んでほしいと心から願っていた。そう思わせたロザムンド・パイクの演技は素晴らしかったと思う。でも、ヒーロー映画の悪者やサイコパスとは違う、一般市民の仮面を被る性根の腐った悪者を演じるってどんな気分なのかな。被害者の老人の一人を演じていたのがダイアン・ウィースト。可愛らしさと凄みを併せ持つ老女を好演していた。『運び屋』にも出ていた。齢70歳を過ぎても売れっ子の役者さんだ。

Pierce Brosnan as 007

In fall 2020, I first watched the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth films of the 007 series starring Pierce Brosnan on the television set and I occasionally did the spy action ones again after that.

Each of them follows the activities of James Bond, an agent of MI6.

Although I had not expected the 007 ones starring Brosnan so much because they had less reputation than other actors' 007 ones, yet they were enjoyable maybe thanks to the pictures that looked not so old. Sean Connery as 007 is manly, Roger Moore is awesome and humorous, and Timothy Dalton is kind of straightforward. As for Pierce Brosna as 007, he is good on the whole because he is handsome, kind of sophisticated and good at action scenes, though his presence is lighter.

GoldenEye was released in 1995. A good movie. The two Bond Girls, Izabella Scorupco on Bond's side and Famke Janssen on the foe's one, are both beautiful. Judi Dench as M appear for the first time.

Tomorrow Never Dies was done in 1997. It is good as a spy action one but did not leave an impression on me that much.

The World Is Not Enough was done in 1999. Sophie Marceau appears in it. She was in her late thirties on the release. I had been captivated by her cuteness when she was in her late teens, however, I was not fascinated by her maybe because she played the bitch villain in the flick. She must have devoted herself to the role so much that I was not.

Die Another Day was done in 2002. Madonna did cameo appearance. I recently watched House of Gucci starring Lady Gaga who is a world-famous singer as well as her. I felt that the younger performer was not excellent at acting but she was far better than the diva in Body. Then I think that Madonna might as well more focus on live performances without be ambitious for acting so that she would please her fans. In addition, Michael Madsen appears in it. I think that he looks to be a typical American as well as Jeff Bridges and he is the American Riki Takeuchi. His appearance somehow delights me always. He is a good actor with presence. Halle Berry also acts in it. I had had no intention of racial discrimination but I had held the fixed idea that the Bond Girls are Caucasian beauties, so personally I had felt odd whenever I watched the Asian and African Bond Girls in the 007 series, however, I did not feel odd with Berry, moreover, I have started to think that races does not matter to the Bond Girls. Her gorgeousness changed my stereotyped thought.

ピアース・ブロスナン主演の『007』シリーズの第17作から第20作をそれぞれ2020年秋にTV画面で初観賞。その後も折りに触れて観ているスパイ・アクション映画群。

MI6のエージェント、ジェームズ・ボンドの活躍が描かれている。

他のボンドたちと比べるとあまり評判がよくなかったので、ブロスナンの007にはあまり期待していなかったが、映像があまり古くないせいもあるのか結構楽しめた。ショーン・コネリーは男らしくて、ロジャー・ムーアはハンサムな上にユーモアがあって、ティモシー・ダルトンは堅物に見えた。ブロスナンは、確かに他のボンドと比べると存在感が薄いが、まあまあハンサムで適度に洗練されていてアクションも無難にこなしているので、概ね悪くはないと思う。

『ゴールデンアイ』の公開は1995年。良作。ボンドガールが敵味方共に綺麗だ。ファムケ・ヤンセンとイザベラ・スコルプコ。そして、ジュディ・デンチがＭとして初登場。

『トゥモロー・ネバー・ダイ』の公開は1997年。スパイ・アクション映画としては良作だと思うが、概してあまり印象に残らなかった。

『ワールド・イズ・ノット・イナフ』の公開は1999年。ボンドガールとしてソフィー・マルソーが出演。公開時30代前半。10代だった頃の彼女にはよく見惚れたが、性悪な敵役である本作ではあまり魅力的には見えなかった。それだけ、役に徹していたということだろう。

『ダイ・アナザー・デイ』の公開は2002年。マドンナがカメオ出演。先日観覧した『ハウス・オブ・グッチ』に出ていた同じく歌姫のレディ・ガガは、あまり演技が上手いとは思わなかったが『ボディ』のマドンナよりは断然良かった。マドンナは欲張らずに歌とライブ・パフォーマンスに集中した方がファンも喜ぶと思う。そして、ジェフ・ブリッジスと同様、いかにもアメリカ人という出で立ちのマイケル・マドセンが出演。アメリカの竹内力だ。なぜか彼が出てくると嬉しくなる。存在感がある良い役者さん。ハル・ベリーも出演。それまで、ボンドガールは白人美女という固定観念があったので、アジア人やアフリカ系の俳優が出てくると、別に人種差別をしているつもりはなかったが、個人的には少し違和感を覚えていた。だが、ベリーには違和感が無かった。そして、人種はどうでもいいなと思い始めた。彼女の魅力が私の固定観念を変えてくれた。
