King Richard (film)

King Richard. A drama film Released in 2021. Based on a true story. Will Smith starred in it.

It tells a story of Richard Williams, the father of the Williams sisters, and depicts how he raised and made the sisters the world-famous professional tennis players.

Will Smith gave a wonderful performance as the stubborn father who sticks to his beliefs no matter what. I was kind of surprised that Smith acted the middle-aged man looking not good in spite of his jovial and handsome image. Then I felt his zest for acting because he was restraining his cheerful and refreshing charms. I like Ali directed by Michael Mann more than other movies starring Smith. The handsome actor then was nominated for Academy Award for his passionate acting as Ali and in 2022 he won an Oscar for his performance as Richard. He finally did it for the first time.

The presenter of the 2022 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, Chris Rock, kind of teased about the head of Will Smith's wife in the ceremony. Will Smith at first listened with a smile, however, he came to and slapped the presenter, then Smith got back to his seat and angrily shouted to him, "Keep my wife's name out of your f**king mouth!" Chris soothingly replied over a microphone, "I'm going to. Okay?" Rock had been expected to make a bitterly funny speech as a stand-up comedian there. He might have anticipated Smith just expressing his regret about his joke later without expecting him to let off steam because both of them are the same race. I do not know why Smith did such a thing in the big event. Was it because of his strong love to his wife? Was it because he feared that his wife would get angry at him if he did nothing about it? Or was it a farce which many people think of it as in the United States? Although Rock seems to be slapped on the face in the still images of it, yet Smith actually slaps him on the left chest in the video. I would have thought that it was too much if Smith had punched him in the face. Personally, I regarded his act as forgivable if he did that with his pure affections to his spout because he just slapped Rock. Moreover, I thought better of him for a man. People say that violence is bad, all the same, I cannot help doing something violent when the opponent seems not to know exactly how I am angry. Afterward, during his acceptance speech for Best Actor, Smith spoke about Denzel Washington who said to him after the racket, "At your highest moment, be careful, that's when the devil comes for you." Africans as well as Latins seem to be far more lively and jovial than shy persons like me, which makes me feel inferiority so I am not a big fan of many African actors. Smith had been one of them, though I have become a fan of him since I watched his performance in the 2021 movie and I knew his attitude toward Chris. As for Denzel, I have been a big fan of him because he seems to be a person of character. I thought that Denzel was wonderful when I heard the episode. I will be careful at such moments according to his words. By the way, Smith will possibly be deprived of the Oscar due to that slap. Life is tough. If a woman did the same thing, she would not be. 

I was concerned about Richard Williams after watching it, so I studied about him. Richard's real life made me think that the movie beautified the role of him. I also thought that the Williams sisters might have become the superstars only with their excellent physical abilities and the help of their mother, Oracene, though I suspected that Richard was needed because the society was more male-oriented than now. It means nothing to assume the kind of things here, though. Either way, every film will be directed.

The story develops not so dramatically. I was gradually touched by it and I was impressed by the scene in which Richard teaches his daughters about the importance of humility making them watch the animation picture Cinderella. The film does not more deal with racial discrimination than my expectations, which kind of disappointed me, though I believe that it is a good drama flick.

『ドリームプラン』。2021年公開のドラマ映画。実話。ウィル・スミス主演。

世界的に有名なプロテニス・プレイヤーのウィリアムズ姉妹を育て上げた彼女たちの父親リチャード・ウィリアムズのお話。

ウィル・スミスが自分の信念を曲げない頑固親父を好演。陽気でハンサムなイメージの彼が、見た目が残念な中年男性を演じていた事に少し驚いた。そして、彼の持ち味でもある陽気で爽やかなイメージを抑えたその演技に彼の役者魂を感じた。彼の作品で一番好きなのはマイケル・マン監督作の『ALI アリ』。その熱演でアカデミー賞主演男優賞にもノミネートされていた。そして、2022年、本作で主演男優としてオスカーをついに獲得。初受賞のようだ。

その授賞式で、長編ドキュメンタリー映画賞のプレゼンターを任されたクリス・ロックがスピーチ中にスミスの妻の容姿を揶揄した。最初は笑っていたスミスだったが、壇上に近づいてロックを平手打ち。席に戻ったスミスがロックに向かって大声で「お前のクソッタレな口から俺の妻の名前を出すな！」と叫ぶと、ロックは「もう言わないよ」とマイクを使って返答。コメディアンとしてきわどいスピーチを期待されていたロックは、同じアフリカ系のスミスなら遺憾の意を後で示すくらいで済ませてくれるだろうと計算していたのだろうし、スミスがあそこまで怒りを露わにするとは思っていなかっただろう。なぜ、スミスがあの晴れの舞台であんな事をしてしまったのかはよく分からない。妻への強い愛か、何もしなかったら後で妻に怒られるのが怖かったからか、はたまた、あれは、アメリカでまことしやかにささやかれている、茶番劇だったのか。写真ではロックの顔が平手打ちされたかのように見えるが、動画でよく確認すると、スミスはロックの左胸を平手打ちしている。もし、スミスが拳でロックの顔を殴っていたらやり過ぎだったと思うが、胸をはたいただけなので、個人的には、あれが妻への強い愛から生じたのならば、許されない行動ではないと思うし、また、その男らしさで彼を見直した。暴力はいけないとよく言われるが、こっちの怒りの度合いが分からない相手にはある程度の行動は仕方がない。その後、彼が、自身の主演男優賞受賞のスピーチ中に、デンゼル・ワシントンが「最高の瞬間の時こそ気をつけろ。悪魔が忍び寄るのはそんな時だ」と先ほど話してくれた、と言っていた。アフリカ系の方々は、ラテン系の方々同様、軽くて陽気過ぎる気質の方が多いので、内気な私は劣等感を覚えるため、大ファンのアフリカ系俳優は少ない。ウィル・スミスも、本作の演技や今回の立ち居振る舞いで好感を持ったが、それまではあまり好きな俳優さんではなかった。だが、人格者というイメージもあるデンゼル・ワシントンは好きだ。そのエピソードを知った時はさすがデンゼルと思った。自分にもそんな瞬間が来たら気を付けよう。因みに、スミスのオスカーはあの平手打ちではく奪される可能性があるらしい。世知辛い世の中だ。女性が同じ事をしても、そんな展開にはならなかったはず。

観覧後、気になってリチャード・ウィリアムズさんについて調べてみたら、映画ではかなり美化されているんだろうな、と感じる人生を歩まれていた。また、ウィリアムズ姉妹はその身体能力と母のオラシーンの存在だけでもスーパースターになれたかもな、でも、当時は今以上に男社会だっただろうからリチャードの存在はやはり必要だっただろうな、などと考えさせられた。ま、ここで想像や仮定の話をしても仕方がない。映画に演出は付き物だし。

淡々と物語が進む展開。劇的な場面は少な目。じんわりと感動した。印象的だったのは、リチャードが『シンデレラ』を娘たちに観せて謙虚さの重要性を説く場面。期待していたほど人種差別問題に触れていなかったので若干拍子抜けもしたが、良いドラマ映画であることは確かだ。

Spider-Man: No Way Home

In January 2022, I watched Spider-Man: No Way Home for the first time at Movix Kameari. The superhero film was released in 2021. It is the third one in the Spider-Man series starring Tom Holland. When I viewed the first one Homecoming on the television set, I felt that it was not more enjoyable than the Spider-Man series starring Tobey Maguire, so I decided not to do the third one at a theater, however, I came to want to do it because many people who did the latest one praised it right after the release. The newest one lived up to the rumors and was amazingly entertaining.

The story starts just after the one of Spider-Man: Far From Home, the previous one. It depicts the youth of Peter Parker, who is a high-school student and whose identity as Spider-Man is exposed, and the battle of Spider-Man and his friends against the villains.

I had not watched the last one, so I did not fully understand some of the scenes but I could enjoy it from the beginning, for it was not so complicated. As for Doctor Strange, I did not know about him. I laughed at him in spite of myself when Benedict Cumberbatch playing him appeared with a flashy costume and he looked far different from him as an ordinary citizen in The Courier that I did in October 2021 at a theater. Although I thought of Doctor Strange as like a clown whose impact will quickly vanish, yet he plays an important role toward the ending. Cumberbatch gave an impressive performance as him. I knew that Doctor Strange is a character who appears in other Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks later, though I have not gotten interested in the character until now. I like to watch Cumberbatch's acting in a drama one like The Power of the Dog, anyway. Then when I was viewing the ending and thinking that only Happy's presence was light, John Favreau acting him showed up and gave a restrainedly elegant performance. Each character has its many lines in the picture. It is good in not only action but also human drama.

I laughed at the use of the multiverse as well as the showy costume of Doctor Strange, moreover, after watching it, I was impressed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe series can make their movies endlessly by using the notion, though I also laughed at how greedy they are for money.  

I believe that the story's theme is the phrase "With great power, there must also come great responsibility" which Uncle Ben persuasively says to Peter Parker played Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man and Aunt May admonishes to Peter in No Way Home. I do not have such power. The fact makes me smile wryly thinking that being ordinary is not too bad.

I was the most impressed with Tom Holland's gentle, innocent and somewhat childlike face slightly with a look of sorrow. I also thought that it is natural that he has been hugely popular.

Watching the film, I regretted that I had not done not only the last one and The Amazing Spider-Man series but also the Marvel Cinematic Universe ones in which Tom Holland as Spider-Man turns up. I quickly did all of them after doing it and I did the newest one again at the IMAX theater of Toho Cinemas Nagareyama Ootakanomori the next month. I was more moved than the first time and I more wanted to watch especially the conversation among Spider-Man and his allies coming from the different universes, moreover, their good-bye scene made me feel really lonely.

スパイダーマン：ノー・ウェイ・ホーム

2022年１月、Movix亀有にて『スパイダーマン：ノー・ウェイ・ホーム』を初観賞。2021年公開のスーパーヒーロー映画。トム・ホランド主演の『スパイダーマン』の３作目。1作目の『ホームカミング』をTV画面で観た時にトビー・マグワイアの『スパイダーマン』シリーズほどには面白く感じなかったので、本作の映画館での観覧は見送ろうと思っていたが、公開後に絶賛していた方々が大勢いらっしゃったので観る気になった。そして、噂通り、最高の作品だった。

物語は前作『ファー・フロム・ホーム』の直後から始まる。スパイダーマンであることを世間にばらされた高校生ピーター・パーカーの青春と、ヒーローとして彼の仲間たちと共に悪者たちと闘う姿が描かれている。

前作を観ていなかったので、よく分からなかった点があったが、それほど複雑でもなかったため、冒頭から楽しめた。ミスター・ストレンジの事も知らなかったので、彼を演じたベネディクト・カンバーバッチが登場した時は、その出で立ちが派手過ぎて、また、2021年10月に観覧した『クーリエ：最高機密の運び屋』での一般市民の役柄と違い過ぎて笑ってしまった。出落ちかと思っていたが終盤で重要な役割も果たしていた彼。演技はさすがだった。観賞後、他のMCU作品にも出ているキャラクターだと知ったが、今のところ、その役にそこまで興味は湧いていない。彼の演技は『パワー・オブ・ザ・ドック』のようなドラマ映画で観たい。終盤で、ハッピーの存在感だけが薄かったなと思い返していたら、最後に彼を演じていたジョン・ファブローが渋い演技を決めていた。主要な登場人物のほとんどに見せ場がある、アクションだけではない、良質なドラマ映画だ。

ミスター・ストレンジの出で立ちと同様に笑ってしまったのはマルチバースの存在。観覧後、MCUは無限にこのシリーズの作品を生み出す術を手に入れたなと感心すると同時に、ガメツイ商売根性だと笑ってしまった。

この物語のテーマは、トビー・マグワイアの『スパイダーマン』でベンおじさんが、そして、本作でメイおばさんがピーターに諭すように言っていた「大いなる力には大いなる責任が伴う」。私にはそんな大いなる力は無い。凡人でもいい事はあるなと苦笑い。

特に魅せられたのは、ピーター・パーカーとスパイダーマンを演じた、憂いが滲んだ優し気な、そして、少年っぽさが残っている純粋そうなトム・ホランドの表情。こりゃ、大人気なのも当然だ、と思った。

観賞中に悔んだのは、前作だけでなく、『アメイジング・スパイダーマン』シリーズや、トム・ホランドが演じるスパイダーマンが出ているMCU作品をほとんど観ていなかった事。観覧後、一通り足早にそれらを観て、翌月、TOHOシネマズ 流山おおたかの森のIMAX劇場で再観覧。初観賞時以上に感動した。特に異世界から現れた盟友たちとの会話はずっと聞いていたかったし、最後の別れが切なかった。

CODA

In February 2022, I watched CODA for the first time at Toho Cinemas Nagareyama Ootakanomori. The coming-of-age drama film was released in 2021. It is a remake of the 2014 French movie La Famille Bélier.

It depicts the youth of Ruby who is healthy and has been born in and raised by a deaf family.

I was moved to tears by the movie and I was done to tears at a theater for the first time after having watched Bohemian Rhapsody, The Greatest Showman and Blinded by the Light in recent years. The singing of Ruby performed by Emilia Jones was really touching especially with sign language.

I hesitate to watch a flick, in which physically disabled characters appear, because there are always concerns that the story is hypocritical, however, people, whose remarks I have usually referred to, praised the one, so I thought that it was worth watching on a big screen, then I went to the theater. Although I had imagined it to be like Teen Spirit starring Elle Fanning, yet the story was realistic. The development was not beyond my expectations before reaching the ending. When I began to think why the people praised it like that and to feel that it was disappointing, the concert of Ruby's chorus group started, then as they were singing my favorite song "Starman" written by David Bowie, I easily thought of musical masterpieces as timeless watching Ruby and the members enjoying to sing together and Ruby's dad gazing at his daughter when a teardrop suddenly fell down from my eyes. I was puzzled by that at the moment but I could not stop crying after that because the following development was really dramatic. I felt cleansed.

Except for "Starman", I felt happy when I heard "I Fought the Law" by The Clash. I love Sex Pistols but I have not liked The Clash and Green Day, so I have regarded myself as not a Punk rock fan, however, I felt the punk number to be cool when I unexpectedly heard it. People might come to love something that way.

I thought that Emilia Jones was not so beautiful but she was really charming and cute. I was touched especially when Ruby performed by Jones shows an attitude toward a young man who she is falling in love with.

The moving picture has been nominated for the 2022 Academy Award for Best Picture. I will be pleased if the picture or The Power of the Dog will win it.

コーダ あいのうた

2022年２月、TOHOシネマズ 流山おおたかの森にて『コーダ あいのうた』を初観賞。2021年公開の青春映画。2014年公開のフランス映画『エール』のリメイク。

ろう者の家庭で生まれ育った末娘で健常者のルビーの青春が描かれている。

感涙した。近年では、『ボヘミアン・ラプソディ』、『グレイテスト・ショーマン』、および、『カセットテープ・ダイアリーズ』で感涙したが、それ以来の感涙だった。ルビーを演じたエミリア・ジョーンズの歌唱、特に手話を交えたそれは本当に感動的だった。

登場人物で身体障碍者が出てくるとなると、偽善っぽい物語になっているのではという懸念があって毎回観るのに二の足を踏むが、本作は日ごろから意見を参考にしている様々な方が絶賛していたので、大きなスクリーンで観るべき作品だと感じて映画館に足を運んだ。観賞前は、エル・ファニング主演の『ティーン・スピリット』のような展開を想像していたが、より現実的な物語だった。そして、正直、終盤前までの展開は予想を超える事はなかった。なんであんなに称賛されていたのかな、期待外れだったな、と思い始めた時、ルビーの合唱団の発表会が始まって私の好きなデヴィット・ボウイの「スターマン」を彼女たちが歌い出した。名曲は時を超えるなあ、と呑気に考えながら彼女たちが楽しそうに歌う姿と彼女を見つめる父親を眺めていた時、突然、涙がこぼれた。その瞬間、そんな自分に戸惑ったが、その後の怒涛の展開で涙が止まらなくなった。心が洗われた。

「スターマン」以外では、ザ・クラッシュの「アイ・フォウト・ザ・ロウ」が流れ出した時に楽しくなった。セックス・ピストルズは大好きだが、ザ・クラッシュやグリーン・デイはあまり好きにはなれなかったので、私はパンクロック・ファンではないと思っていたが、不意に耳にしたその曲はカッコよかった。好きになるきっかけなんてそんなものなんだろうな。

主演のエミリア・ジョーンズはそんなに綺麗だとは思わなかったが、とても魅力的だった。特に、彼女が演じたルビーが想いを寄せる男の子に対する態度は、本当にいじらしくて可愛らしかった。

本作は、2022年のアカデミー賞作品賞にノミネートされているらしい。本作か『パワー・オブ・ザ・ドック』が受賞してくれたら嬉しいな。

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

In February 2020, I watched Ghostbusters: Afterlife for the first time at Movix Kameari. The comedy action film was released in 2021 and the forth one of the Ghostbusters series. It is the sequel to the second one, Ghostbusters II, not the third one, the boost of Ghostbusters. The first one, Ghostbusters, is a masterpiece that I have watched many times. I liked the third one the best because my favorite actor Melissa McCarthy is in it and the first one's special effects looked to be dated, though the acting of Bill Murray in the original one is entertaining the most. I had not watched the second one because I had assumed it to be a poor work, for a sequel to a quite popular movie tends to be rubbish, though I regretted that I had not when watching the forth one. It stars Mckenna Grace.

It tells the story of the new Ghostbusters formed by the two grandchildren of a Ghostbuster flourishing in New York in the 1980's with their best friends. The new team fight ghosts in the countryside in Oklahoma.

The protagonist is a granddaughter, Phoebe, of the old Ghostbusters' member Spengler played by late Harold Ramis. I thought of her as a boy at the beginning but I realized that she is a girl in the scenes in which she gradually gets lively and lovely as she begins to know about the truth of her grandfather. Mckenna Grace gave a charming and dignified performance as the girl. Her big brother, Trevor, was performed by Finn Wolfhard who did a talkative boy in It. He looks like Timothee Chalamet and one of today's handsome guys. The siblings and each best friend form the new Ghostbusters. Phoebe's pal is an Asian charming boy, Podcast. Trevor's one is an African pretty young woman played by Celeste O'Connor. I felt that the flick is highly conscious of political correctness as well as the Spiderman series starring Tom Holland. The two members were cute as well as the siblings of course.

I smiled in spite of myself watching the scene where Phoebe is jailed with her friends due to the police's ignorance of ghost, asks a police officer to borrow a telephone, is asked by the officer who she is going to call, and she does a former Ghostbuster Stanz played by Dan Aykroyd. I get thrilled quiet well after that. I was also amused by how elderly the old Ghostbusters are when they show up to help the young Ghostbusters, though it could not be helped considering their ages.  

The director is Jason Reitman. He is the son of Ivan Reitman who directed Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. Jason's father passed away on February twelfth in 2022. I overflew with deep emotion because I heard the sad news some days after I viewed it. The tale of Phoebe, her mother and her grandfather, the Spengler family for three generations, could dramatically be depicted probably thanks to Ivan's advice that Jason should seriously have listened to.

I was really touched by not only the human drama but also the magnificent Computer Graphics Interface pictures, though it was the first time I had watched an installment in the series at a theater. Anyway, it is the best one in the series without doubt.

ゴーストバスターズ/アフターライフ

2022年２月、Movix亀有にて『ゴーストバスターズ/アフターライフ』を初観賞。2021年公開のコメディ・アクション映画。『ゴーストバスターズ』シリーズの４作目。2016年に公開された３作目のリブート版ではなく1989年公開の２作目『ゴーストバスターズ２』の続編。１作目はもう何度も観ている名作。私の好きなメリッサ・マッカーシーが出ているので、そして、１作目は特殊効果の映像が少し古く感じるので、一番好きなのは３作目だった。それでも、一番見てて楽しいのは１作目のビル・マーレイの演技だ。本作観賞前、２作目はヒット作の続編にありがちな駄作だと決めつけていて未観だった。観賞中、その事を後悔した。マッケナ・グレイス主演。

1980年代のニューヨークで活躍したゴーストバスターズを祖父に持つ孫たちとその友人たちで結成された新ゴーストバスターズが、オクラホマ州の田舎町でゴーストたちと戦うお話。

主人公は、故ハロルド・ライミスが演じていた旧ゴーストバスターズの一員スペングラー教授の孫娘フィービー。最初は彼女を男の子だと思っていたが、自分の祖父の真実を知るにつれて次第に生き生きし出して可愛らしくなっていく様を見ながら、女の子だと気づいた。マッケナ・グレイスがそんな彼女を可愛らしくも凛々しく好演。そして、フィービーの兄トレヴァーを演じたのは、『IT／イット "それ"が見えたら、終わり。』でおしゃべりな少年を演じていたフィン・ウルフハード。ティモシー・シャラメを連想する風貌。今時の美男子だ。その兄妹とそのそれぞれの親友たちで４人組の新ゴーストバスターズを結成。フィービーの親友はアジア系の愛らしい少年ポッド・キャスト。トレヴァーの親友は彼が想いを寄せるアフリカ系の若い美女。セレステ・オコナーが演じていた。トム・ホランド主演の『スパイダーマン』シリーズ同様、ポリティカル・コレクトの意識の高さを感じた。もちろん、二人ともその兄妹と同じくらい魅力的だった。

思わず笑ってしまったのは、ゴーストの事を何も知らない警察に捕まって留置場に入れられたフィービーが警官に電話を借りたいと言って、その警官から、誰にかけるんだ、と尋ねられたフィービーが電話をかけた相手が、ダン・エイクロイド演じる旧ゴーストバスターズの一員スタンツ教授だった時。ワクワクが止まらなかった。若いゴーストバスターズを助けるべく現れた旧ゴーストバスターズが、年齢を考えれば仕方ないが、若干老いぼれていたのも可笑しかった。

監督はジェイソン・ライトマン。『ゴーストバスターズ』シリーズの第１作と第２作を監督したアイヴァン・ライトマンの息子さんだ。そのアイヴァンさんは2022年２月12日に永眠。その悲しいニュースを聞いたのが観覧直後だったので感慨深くなった。フィービー、彼女の母親、そして、その父親の３代にわたるスペングラー家の物語がしっかり描かれていたのも、ジェイソンが父の助言をしっかり聞いていたからに違いない。

人間ドラマだけでなく、映画館で初めて観たシリーズ作だったせいか、その壮大なCGIにも感動した。文句無しのシリーズ最高作だ。

House of Gucci

In February 2022, I watched House of Gucci for the first time at Movix Kameari. The drama film is based on a true story and was released in 2020. The director is Ridley Scott. The cast are gorgeous.

It depicts the human drama of the family of Gucci known as the luxury brand name from the late 1970's

It is also the love and hate drama of Maurizio Gucci, one of the successors to Gucci, and young Italian woman named Patrizia. Maurizio is naïve and has no interest in his family business when he is a student. The young man accepts Patrizia's aggressive approach and even marries her. After that, he continues to be obedient with her but gradually becomes offensive to her, then he stops to be manipulated by her with the help of his pride as a man. Adam Driver gave a delicate performance as Maurizio who is angsty and humble at first but becomes kind of respectable thanks to his wife and finally conceited despite her dedication. Lady Gaga acted Patrizia. I was kind of surprised because she was more diminutive than I had expected, though I had sometimes watched her singing. Gaga looks to be strong-minded, so I felt that she is just right for the role of the Italian woman. Then her passionate expressions and motions were wroth watching, though I thought that her acting was not so good but at least it was good for a professional singer.   

Al Pacino appeared in it. Although I love him in his forties and fifties, yet I was kind of disappointed at him who I watched in Irishman for the third time at a theater because he looked to be elderly, so I did not expect him too much in the 2020 film. My prediction might have worked. I felt that he gave a charming performance as an old man for his age. I hope that he will be active as long as possible.

Jeremy Irons played the role of Rodolfo Gucci, Maurizio's father, who reminded me of Ferrari's president in Ford v Ferrari. Irons is English, all the same, I was charmed by the aura of the Italian dandy old man who Irons acted.

I think that Ridley Scott's precedent film, The Last Duel, was good but it was not so impressive. So was his newest one, though it was quietly touching because it depicts human stupidity. I at least prefer it to the last one.

The characters who really existed seemed to be at the mercy of the brand name Gucci, so, honestly, the story was not so dramatic. Rather, they looked to be ordinary persons. People easily come down if they forget their places. Money makes people go out of their mind in the end. I suspect that little rich people with small dreams would be truly the happiest. I felt the same thing when I viewed Crazy Rich Asians starring Constance Wu.

ハウス・オブ・グッチ

2022年２月、Movix亀有にて『ハウス・オブ・グッチ』を初観賞した。2020年公開の実話を基にしたドラマ映画。監督はリドリー・スコットで俳優陣も豪華だ。

高級ブランドで有名なグッチ一族の、1970年代後半以降の華麗と言うよりも俗な人間ドラマが描かれている。

グッチ一族の後継者の一人、マウリツィオ・グッチと若いイタリア娘パトリツィアとの愛憎物語とも言える本作。パトリツィアの積極的なアプローチを受けて結婚までしてしまった世間知らずで家業にも興味の無い御曹司マウリツィオは、婚姻後も野心家のパトリツィアに従順であったが、次第に彼女が疎ましくなり、男の意地も手伝って言いなりになるのを止める。悩める謙虚な若者から妻のおかげである程度立派な男になれたにもかかわらず、そのまま思い上がってしまったマウリツィオをアダム・ドライバーが繊細に好演。そして、パトリツィア役はレディ・ガガ。これまでに彼女が歌唱していた姿を度々目にしていたが、思っていたよりも小柄だったのに少し驚いた。だが、彼女の気の強そうな顔つきはパトリツィア役にはうってつけに感じた。演技は、本業が歌手の割には良かったが、それほど上手いとは感じなかったものの、その情熱的な表情やふるまいは観応えがあった。

アル・パチーノも出演。40代と50代の彼は大好きだが、数年前に観た『アイリッシュマン』の３回目の観覧時に老いが気になって若干失望してしまった。本作では、あまり期待せずにいたのが幸いしたのか、年相応の爺様を魅力たっぷりに好演していた。まだまだ枯れ切ってほしくない俳優さんだ。

ジェレミー・アイアンズが演じた、マウリツィオの父ロドルフォ・グッチを見ながら、『フォードvsフェラーリ』に出ていたフェラーリの会長を思い出した。アイアンズは英国人らしいが、それでも、彼が演じたイタリア人の爺様のダンディな雰囲気には魅せられた。

監督のリドリー・スコットの前作『最後の決闘裁判』は、良作だとは思うが、心にはあまり響かなかった。本作でも響かなかったが、人間の愚かさが描かれていてじんわり沁みた。少なくとも、前作よりは好きだ。

「グッチ」というブランド名に翻弄された、本作における実在した方々のドラマは、正直、感動的ではなかった。むしろ、普通の人々に思えた。財を成しても身の程をわきまえていないと人はすぐに転落する。結局、人を狂わせるのは大金だ。コンスタン・ウー主演の『クレイジー・リッチ』を観た時にも思ったが、本当に幸せなのは小さな夢を持った謙虚な小金持ちなんだろうな。
