Casino Royale

In October 2020, I watched Casino Royale for the first time on the television set. I have occasionally watched the spy action film released in 2006 since then. It is the first one starring Daniel Craig as James Bond and the twenty-first 007 one.

It follows the activities of James Bond, a MI6 agent, who has just gotten a license to kill.

Daniel Craig's 007 is not frivolous as well as Timothy Dalton's 007 and his 007 is far different about it from Sean Connery's and Roger Moore's who easily get laid, however, his 007 has sexual charms as well as Connery's and Moore's and more than Dalton's. Then I believe that Craig's deserves to have a license to kill more than other actor's. Although Craig is medium height and build for a Westerner, yet his 007 looks to be a real fighter because of his expression, physicality and carriage. I am thrilled by how he just pushes forward to accomplish his missions. I like his Bond with coolness and machismo the most among James Bond actors.

Mads Mikkelsen, who is called a Scandinavian treasure in Japan, appears in it as an enemy. I first watched him in At Eternity's Gate but I was not so impressed by him maybe because of Willem Dafoe's overwhelming presence. I want to watch it again in the near future. I first recognized him when I heard the news that he succeeded to the role of Johnny Depp in the Fantastic Beasts series after Depp was dropped. And I first knew that Japanese fans of him call him Sir Mads. He was as sexy as they say. If I had not viewed the first 007 movie starring Craig, I would have not done Another Round.

Judi Dench acted as M in the 2006 flick following the Pierce Brosnan's 007 ones. Her presence was wonderful. She also charmingly performed the Queen in Victoria & Abdul eleven years later. She has begun to appear in movies in her early fifties and still been a wonderful actor even in her eighties.

007/カジノ・ロワイヤル

2020年10月、『007/カジノ・ロワイヤル』をTV画面にて初観賞。その後も折に触れて観ている2006年公開のスパイ・アクション映画。ダニエル・クレイグが演じるジェームズ・ボンドの第１作。『007』シリーズの21作目。

殺しのライセンスを取得したばかりのMI6のエージェント、ジェームズ・ボンドの活躍が描かれている。

ダニエル・クレイグが演じる007は、堅物っぽかったティモシー・ダルトンと同様にあまり浮ついていない。手あたり次第に女と寝る大昔の007とは大違いだ。ただ、彼はダルトン以上に、そして、ショーン・コネリーやロジャー・ムーアと同じくらい男の色気を漂わせている。そして、歴代のボンド俳優の中で殺しのライセンスに一番ふさわしいのは、ダニエル・クレイグだと思う。欧米人としては中肉中背だが、顔つきや体つき、身のこなしが闘う男だ。任務遂行の為にひたすら邁進する姿にシビれる。落ち着いた雰囲気と男臭さを併せ持つクレイグが、ボンド俳優の中で一番好きだ。

悪役で、日本では「北欧の至宝」と呼ばれている、マッツ・ミケルセンが出演。初めて観た彼が出演している映画は『永遠の門 ゴッホの見た未来』。その時は、ゴッホ役のウィレム・デフォーの存在感が圧倒的だったせいか、あまり印象に残らなかった。近いうちに再観賞したい。そして、初めて彼を認識したのは、『ファンタスティック・ビースト』シリーズを降板したジョニー・デップの代役に抜擢されたニュースを聞いた時。世の女性にマッツ様と呼ばれているのもその時知った。本作でも噂に違わぬセクシーなお方だったし、本作を観賞していなかったら『アナザーラウンド』も観ていなかっただろう。

ピアース・ブロスナンの『007』シリーズからM役で出演しているジュディ・デンチも引き続きMとして出演。さすがの存在感。11年後に主演していた『ヴィクトリア女王 最期の秘密』でも女王様をチャーミングに演じていた。映画に出演し出したのは50歳をすぎてかららしい。80歳を過ぎても変わらず素敵な俳優さんだ。

I Care a Lot

In January 2022, I watched I Care a Lot at Kadokawa Cinema Yurakucho for the first time. The black comedy film was released in 2020.

It depicts a women who deceives wealthy and isolated elderly persons, legally steals their fortunes and gets into a difficult situation because one of them is the close relative of a gang boss.

What a disgusting movie! Most of the characters are wicked. A presiding judge seems to be good but he is a moron, for he was used by the vicious woman. I came to want not to live longer, though I do not have much property which an evil person like her desire to steal.

At the beginning, she asks herself if she is a lion or a lamb. I think that the kind of question is exaggerated whenever I hear it. Firstly, we human beings stand at the top of the ecosystem on earth because we are crafty monkeys. Being cowardly is a means of surviving. I understand a longing for strong wild animals but I cannot seriously think about ultimate questions metaphorically using animals.

The Westerners seem to like metaphorically using lions. English paper wrote the head line "Ten Heroic Lions, One Stupid Boy" a day after England lost mostly due to David Beckham's red card in a soccer World Cup, which became a popular topic. In Angel Has Fallen, moreover, two men performed by Gerard Butler and Danny Huston agree that they are both lions. I prefer tigers and wolves, though. I admire especially a lone wolf with a dignity.

Human beings could be divided into deceivers and dupes. I hate to become each of them but I would be deceived by swindlers in the end if I do. The world is nasty.

Although many people praise the protagonist for eagerly and persistently deceiving the elderly people and fiercely resisting the gangsters' attack as highly delightful, yet I hoped from my heart that she would end up awkwardly dying. Rosamund Pike gave such a wonderful performance that I would feel that way. I wonder how she felt when she acted a completely bad person pretending a good citizen, though. I think the role is deferent from the villain in a hero movie and a psychopath. Dianne Wiest played one of the aged victims. She acted well as an old lady with cuteness and fearfulness in it. She also appeared in The Mule. The veteran actor has been popular even since turning seventy. 

パーフェクト・ケア

2022年１月、角川シネマ有楽町にて、『パーフェクト・ケア』を初観賞。2020年公開のブラック・コメディ映画。

裕福で孤独な老人たちを騙して彼らの財産を合法的に奪い続けていた女が、マフィアのボスの身内に手を出して窮地に追い込まれるお話。

胸くそ悪い映画だった。登場するのはほぼ全員悪党。善人に見えたのは、腹黒い女たちに利用されている間抜けな裁判長のみ。長生きするのが嫌になってくるお話だ。ま、私には彼女のような悪者に狙われるほどの財産は無いが。

冒頭で主人公の悪女が、私はライオンか子羊か、と自問自答している。この手の質問を耳にする度に、毎回、大げさだなと思う。そもそも、我々ヒトはずる賢いサルだったからこの星の生態系の頂点に座っているのだ。卑怯は時に生き延びる手段だ。強い動物に憧れる気持ちは理解できるが、動物を用いる究極の質問に関しては、真面目に考える気にもなれない。

それにしても、欧米人はライオンを比喩に使うのが好きだ。サッカーワールドカップでデイヴィッド・ベッカムがレッドカードで退場になりイングランドが敗退した翌日の、彼の母国の新聞が「ライオンのような勇者たち10人と１人の愚か者」という見出しを打った事が、当時、話題になった。そして、昨年観た『エンド・オブ・ステイツ』では、ジェラルド・バトラーとダニー・ヒューストン演じる男たちが、俺たちはライオンだ、と話していた。私は虎や狼の方が好きだな。特に一匹狼の孤高の姿には憧れる。

人間は騙す側と騙される側に分けられるかもだが、私はどちらにも属したくない。こんな甘えた考え方をしていると詐欺師たちのカモになるのかもしれない。油断大敵な夜の中だ。

主人公の、老人たちを騙す事に執念を燃やす姿やマフィア相手でも一歩も引かない態度を痛快だと絶賛する方々が大勢いるが、私は、彼女には無様に死んでほしいと心から願っていた。そう思わせたロザムンド・パイクの演技は素晴らしかったと思う。でも、ヒーロー映画の悪者やサイコパスとは違う、一般市民の仮面を被る性根の腐った悪者を演じるってどんな気分なのかな。被害者の老人の一人を演じていたのがダイアン・ウィースト。可愛らしさと凄みを併せ持つ老女を好演していた。『運び屋』にも出ていた。齢70歳を過ぎても売れっ子の役者さんだ。

In fall 2020, I first watched the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth films of the 007 series starring Pierce Brosnan on the television set and I occasionally did the spy action ones again after that.

Each of them follows the activities of James Bond, an agent of MI6.

Although I had not expected the 007 ones starring Brosnan so much because they had less reputation than other actors' 007 ones, yet they were enjoyable maybe thanks to the pictures that looked not so old. Sean Connery as 007 is manly, Roger Moore is awesome and humorous, and Timothy Dalton is kind of straightforward. As for Pierce Brosna as 007, he is good on the whole because he is handsome, kind of sophisticated and good at action scenes, though his presence is lighter.

GoldenEye was released in 1995. A good movie. The two Bond Girls, Izabella Scorupco on Bond's side and Famke Janssen on the foe's one, are both beautiful. Judi Dench as M appear for the first time.

Tomorrow Never Dies was done in 1997. It is good as a spy action one but did not leave an impression on me that much.

The World Is Not Enough was done in 1999. Sophie Marceau appears in it. She was in her late thirties on the release. I had been captivated by her cuteness when she was in her late teens, however, I was not fascinated by her maybe because she played the bitch villain in the flick. She must have devoted herself to the role so much that I was not.

Die Another Day was done in 2002. Madonna did cameo appearance. I recently watched House of Gucci starring Lady Gaga who is a world-famous singer as well as her. I felt that the younger performer was not excellent at acting but she was far better than the diva in Body. Then I think that Madonna might as well more focus on live performances without be ambitious for acting so that she would please her fans. In addition, Michael Madsen appears in it. I think that he looks to be a typical American as well as Jeff Bridges and he is the American Riki Takeuchi. His appearance somehow delights me always. He is a good actor with presence. Halle Berry also acts in it. I had had no intention of racial discrimination but I had held the fixed idea that the Bond Girls are Caucasian beauties, so personally I had felt odd whenever I watched the Asian and African Bond Girls in the 007 series, however, I did not feel odd with Berry, moreover, I have started to think that races does not matter to the Bond Girls. Her gorgeousness changed my stereotyped thought.

ピアース・ブロスナン主演の『007』シリーズの第17作から第20作をそれぞれ2020年秋にTV画面で初観賞。その後も折りに触れて観ているスパイ・アクション映画群。

MI6のエージェント、ジェームズ・ボンドの活躍が描かれている。

他のボンドたちと比べるとあまり評判がよくなかったので、ブロスナンの007にはあまり期待していなかったが、映像があまり古くないせいもあるのか結構楽しめた。ショーン・コネリーは男らしくて、ロジャー・ムーアはハンサムな上にユーモアがあって、ティモシー・ダルトンは堅物に見えた。ブロスナンは、確かに他のボンドと比べると存在感が薄いが、まあまあハンサムで適度に洗練されていてアクションも無難にこなしているので、概ね悪くはないと思う。

『ゴールデンアイ』の公開は1995年。良作。ボンドガールが敵味方共に綺麗だ。ファムケ・ヤンセンとイザベラ・スコルプコ。そして、ジュディ・デンチがＭとして初登場。

『トゥモロー・ネバー・ダイ』の公開は1997年。スパイ・アクション映画としては良作だと思うが、概してあまり印象に残らなかった。

『ワールド・イズ・ノット・イナフ』の公開は1999年。ボンドガールとしてソフィー・マルソーが出演。公開時30代前半。10代だった頃の彼女にはよく見惚れたが、性悪な敵役である本作ではあまり魅力的には見えなかった。それだけ、役に徹していたということだろう。

『ダイ・アナザー・デイ』の公開は2002年。マドンナがカメオ出演。先日観覧した『ハウス・オブ・グッチ』に出ていた同じく歌姫のレディ・ガガは、あまり演技が上手いとは思わなかったが『ボディ』のマドンナよりは断然良かった。マドンナは欲張らずに歌とライブ・パフォーマンスに集中した方がファンも喜ぶと思う。そして、ジェフ・ブリッジスと同様、いかにもアメリカ人という出で立ちのマイケル・マドセンが出演。アメリカの竹内力だ。なぜか彼が出てくると嬉しくなる。存在感がある良い役者さん。ハル・ベリーも出演。それまで、ボンドガールは白人美女という固定観念があったので、アジア人やアフリカ系の俳優が出てくると、別に人種差別をしているつもりはなかったが、個人的には少し違和感を覚えていた。だが、ベリーには違和感が無かった。そして、人種はどうでもいいなと思い始めた。彼女の魅力が私の固定観念を変えてくれた。

Don't Look Up

In December 2021, I watched Don't Look Up at Human Trust Yurakucho for the first time. The black comedy film was released in 2021. Many prominent actors appear in it.

It tells a story that a universal professor and his graduate student, who discover a comet that will crash into the earth, struggle to communicate the fact to the public through the American present and the mass media.

The personality of the president and her son who is the White House chief of staff was not realistic so much that I quickly felt that it was a shallow comedy, so I enjoyed watching it, especially the scenes to satirize the modern society, however, I could not laugh at the scene toward the ending in which the professor played by Leonardo DiCaprio has dinner with his families and friends because it was quite realistic and unnecessarily long. I would have thought of it as amusing after viewing it if the scene had been simpler. Anyway, I was disappointed at it. If the dinner scene is realistic, the president's character should be too. The shallow president would have been okay if she had been a Japanese prime minister because it has less power than the kingmakers in Japan and far less influence on the world than the president of the United States. First of all, the woman is so shallow that she actually cannot become even a congressperson. Then I believe that the former American presidents Mr. Bush and Mr. Trump have a bad reputation kind of due to a smear campaign through the mass media. I felt like that maybe because I am conservative. How fool the two anchor persons was appropriate because anchor persons only need to be seemingly intelligent, popular in public and convenient for the television stations. 

Meryl Streep gave a wonderful performance aside from if the role is good or bad. Although Leonardo DiCaprio had been awesome when he was young, yet he acted well as the middle-aged professor who does not look cool and has a beard. When Timothee Chalamet showed up in the middle, I felt the cast to be really gorgeous but at the same time I realized that a young handsome man did not before that, so I could accept his appearance in it, though the cast fees must have been enormous.

The flick is generally popular as well as The Last Duel, so I have thought that I am out of touch with the times.

ドント・ルック・アップ

2021年12月、ヒューマントラスト有楽町にて『ドント・ルック・アップ』を初観賞。2021年公開のブラック・コメディ映画。錚々たる有名俳優たちが出演している。

地球に衝突する彗星を発見した大学教授と彼の教え子がその事をアメリカ政府や国民に知らせようと奮闘するお話。

アメリカ大統領とその息子で主席補佐官の人間性にあまりにもリアリティが無さ過ぎたので、これは気楽に観るべきコメディだなと早々に感じて、現在の社会を風刺している場面などを楽しんだが、レオナルド・ディカプリオ演じる大学教授とその家族や仲間たちのラストの描写がやけにリアルで、その時間も必要以上に長すぎると感じてしまい、その場面は全く笑えなかった。その描写がもう少しあっさり終わっていれば、観賞後に面白かったなと思えただろう。だから、その点が残念だった。そのラストの場面をリアルにするなら、大統領の人格ももう少しリアルにすべきだと思う。日本の総理大臣だったら、キングメーカーがより大きな影響力を持っている国でもあるし、世界への影響力はアメリカ大統領ほどでは無いので、多少軽薄な人間の設定でも問題は無いと思うが、アメリカの大統領は世界に影響を及ぼすわけだから、あんな浅はかな人間だったらそもそも議員にすらなれないはずだ。ブッシュさんやトランプさんの悪評も、多少はマスコミのネガティブ報道のせいだと思う。こんな風に感じてしまったのは、私が保守的な考え方を持っているせいかもしれないが。ニュースキャスターは、大衆受けしてテレビ局にとって都合の良いインテリに見える人間しかなれないわけだから、劇中のマヌケな二人で問題は無い。

メリル・ストリープは、設定された役柄の良し悪しはさておき、素晴らしい演技をしていたと思う。そして、若い頃はバリバリの美男俳優だったレオナルド・ディカプリオが、カッコいいとは言えないひげ面のオジサン大学教授を好演。後半にティモシー・シャラメも登場。出演俳優たちが豪華すぎないかとも感じたが、そう言えば若いハンサムな登場人物が出てないし、と納得。でも、俳優たちの出演料の総額は莫大だっただろうな。

この作品は概ね好評だ。私の感性は時代とズレている、と『最後の決闘裁判』に続いて感じてしまった。

In 2020 fall, I first watched The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill, which stars Timothy Dalton and are  the fifteenth and sixteenth films of the 007 series, on the television set. I have done the spy action ones several times since then. They were both released in 1987 and 1989 respectively.

The two films depict the activities of James Bond who is a crack agent with English intelligence agency.

Sean Connery's and Roger Moore's Bonds randomly have sex with pretty women, however, Timothy Dalton's Bond does not resemble them about it, moreover, he makes less jokes, so he looks kind of straight-laced. When he was in his early forties, he looked older than Moore in his fifties also. Although the third Bond actor is far more suitable as the lead of a blockbuster than the fourth one, yet Dalton's 007 films are intriguing as spy action ones because Dalton's Bond looks more serious, in addition, I like his because he is not frivolous, like Daniel Craig's Bond, though he appears plainer than other Bonds. Dalton also does not more stylish as Bond than other Bonds but he is certainly a cool actor anyway.

Bond girls are pretty in the two movies. I bet it is because Dalton's Bond looks less gorgeous than other Bonds. Maryam D'Abo in The Living Daylights, Carey Lowell and Talisa Soto in Licence to Kill especially are lovely and bewitching.

The young Benicio del Toro acts as one of the villains in Licence to Kill which is his second flick. The performer has had a presence since then.

Dalton's 007 films as well as Craig's ones have a serious style, though I do not think of Dalton's Bond as not sexier than Craig's, so I am sorry for the fans of Dalton's ones but I do not prefer them to other 007 ones. All the same, I think that Dalton's two flicks are good as spy action ones.

ティモシー・ダルトンの007

ティモシー・ダルトンが主演した『007』シリーズの第15作と第16作、『リビング・デイライツ』と『消されたライセンス』を2020年秋にTV画面にて初観賞。その後もこれまでに数回観ているスパイアクション映画。それぞれ1987年と1989年に公開された。

イギリスの諜報機関の凄腕スパイ、ジェームズ・ボンドの活躍を描いた作品群。

ショーン・コネリーとロジャー・ムーアが演じていたボンドは、美女たちとすぐに男女の仲になるが、ティモシー・ダルトンが演じたボンドはそうではない。その上、ダルトンが演じた彼はジョークもより少ない。そのせいで彼は堅物に見える。それに、50代でボンドを演じていたムーアは40代前半の彼よりも若々しく見える。娯楽大作の主役としては、やはり、ロジャー・ムーアは別格だ。だが、真面目に見える分、ダルトンが主演した作品はスパイ物としては面白い。そして、後にダニエル・クレイグが演じたボンドと似ている、浮ついていないという点は好感が持てる。だが、歴代のジェームズ・ボンド俳優と比べるとやはり地味に映る。でも、それは、ボンド俳優としてはそう見えるというだけで、ダルトンがカッコいい俳優さんである事は確かだ。

２作品のボンドガールに関しては、ダルトンが歴代俳優と比べて華やかさに欠けるせいか、美人ぞろいだ。『リビング・デイライツ』のマリアム・ダボ、『消されたライセンス』のキャリー・ローウェルとタリサ・ソトがそれぞれ綺麗で妖艶だ。

そして、『消されたライセンス』には若いベニチオ・デル・トロが悪役で出演している。彼にとっては２作目の映画出演らしい。この頃から存在感がある俳優さんだ。

２作品ともダニエル・クレイグ主演の『007』と同じくシリアスな作風だが、あくまでも私の主観だが、ダルトンにはクレイグほどの男の色気が感じられないので、ファンの方には申し訳ないが、両作とも『007』作品としてはあまり好きではない。だが、スパイ映画としては良作だと思う。
