Bohemian Rhapsody #2

In May 2020, I watched Bohemian Rhapsody on DVD and cried. I have watched it at theaters five times and I was moved to tears every time I did it. I hope that I will do it on a big screen next time. It is the most touching movie that I have ever watched.

The movie tells the story about Freddie Mercury, the lead vocalist of the legendary rock band Queen, and his fellows.    

Rami Malek wore artificial tooth to act Freddie Mercury who had bucktooth, however, the real Mercury in the old images was less bucktoothed than Malek in the film. Although Mark Hamill had a hard time erasing the image of Luke Skywalker, yet Malek would not because his impression changes when he does not wear the artificial tooth. He won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2019. I preferred Viggo Mortensen who starred in Green Book but I think that the Egyptian American actor played well. The normal Malek looks like Masataka Kubota a little.

Freddie Mercury was arrogant, like some geniuses, but he easily felt lonesome, though he was Just tormented by the feeling of loneliness particular t a genius and a gay.

The other band members were all unique. Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor, the drummer of Queen, seemed to embody the phrase "a boy will be a boy." I like him. Gwilym Lee as Brian Taylor, the guitarist of Queen, was gentle, generous and reliable. He seemed to expostulate even when he got angry. He was mature. Joseph Mazzello as John Deacon, the bassist of Queen, looked foolish and innocent, which sometimes amused me.

As for Paul, one the band's managers, he was a dirty coward every time I saw him, though I did not know how true his stories were. Anyway, he was such a frienemy. I recently have realized that a guy is it around me. I have to be careful and keep my guard up not to become like Freddie. 

Speaking of the manager, Jim "Miami" Beach said in a meeting when he was still a lawyer for Queen that fortune favors the bold. I love the phrase.

ボヘミアン・ラプソディ #2

2020年５月、『ボヘミアン・ラプソディ』をDVDにて観賞。劇場観賞は５回。全てで感涙。そして、今回も感涙。願わくば、次回はまた映画館で観たい。生涯で一番感動した映画。 

伝説のロックバンド、クイーンのヴォーカリスト、フレディ・マーキュリーと彼の仲間達の物語。 

フレディ・マーキュリーを演じたラミ・マレックは、義歯でフレディの出っ歯を表現していたらしいが、昔の映像を見ると、フレディ自身はあそこまで出っ歯ではない。マーク・ハミルは、ルーク・スカイウォーカーのイメージを払拭するために苦しんだようだが、マレックは義歯の有無で印象が変わるので、フレディのイメージで苦しむ事は無さそうだ。本作でアカデミー主演男優賞を受賞。『グリーンブック』の主演ヴィゴ・モーテンセンの方が好きだったが、マレックの演技も悪くなかったと思う。余談だが、義歯をしていないと何となく窪田正孝に似ている。 

フレディは天才にありがちな傲慢な男。でも、実は寂しがり屋。だが、それは、ゲイである事と天才であるが故の孤独感に苛まれていただけかもしれない。 

彼以外のバンドのメンバーも個性的だ。ベン・ハーディが演じたドラムのロジャー・テイラーは、やんちゃ坊主のまま歳を重ねたような微笑ましい男。そして、グウィリム・リーが演じたギターのブライアン・メイは、優しくて寛容な頼れる男。怒る時も相手を諭しているかの様だった。大人だ。ジョゼフ・マゼロが演じたベースのジョン・ディーコンはとぼけている感じが何だが可笑しい。 

そして、どこまでが事実だったかは分からないが、バンドのマネージャーのポールは、何度観ても糞野郎だ。フレネミーってヤツだな。私の周りにもそれっぽいのがいる。隙を見せないよう気を付けねば。 

また、マイアミが、まだ彼等のマネージャーではなく弁護士だった時にあるミーティングで言った、「幸運は勇者に味方する」は沁みるフレーズだ。

Seven

In May 2020, I watched the movie Seven on DVD. The classic thriller film was released in 1995. The director is David Fincher. 

I have not watched it at theaters but I have done it on TV screens several times. I remembered the ending but I was very entertained again. 

The story follows a pair of young and retiring detectives who tracks down a serial psychotic killer. 

The relationship among the characters is similar to the one in The Silence of the Lambs. Brad Pitt as Mills and Morgan Freeman as Somerset remind me Jodie Foster as Clarice and Scott Gen as Clarice's boss, respectively. Then I associate Kevin Spacey as the serial killer John Doe with Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Lecter. 

Gwyneth Paltrow, acting Mills' wife, was pretty and beautiful. I adore voluptuous women like Jennifer Lopez and Chloe Grace Moretz but I was fascinated by Gwyneth despite her very slender figure. I liked to watch her expressions especially when she wore an anxious look. 

The two main characters gave contrasting performances, which impressed me. Morgan Freeman quietly acted. Brad Pitt casually did. Their combination looked wonderful. 

I was most impressed with Kevin Spacey as the psychotic killer. I felt him intelligent like I did Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Lecter. John Doe repeatedly murdered bearing in mind the seven deadly sins. He was crazy. Simultaneously, I was afraid of myself because I could understand his feelings considering what the victims had done. Then I remembered that I gloated over how Arthur changed to Joker in the movie Joker.

セブン

2020年５月、『セブン』をDVD観賞した。1995年に公開されたスリラー映画の傑作。デヴィット・フィンチャー監督作。 

映画館での観覧は無いが、何度かTV画面で観ている。結末は覚えていたが、それでもまた楽しめた。 

新人刑事とベテラン刑事のコンビが連続殺人犯を追跡する物語。 

登場人物の関係性が『羊たちの沈黙』と類似している。新人刑事のブラット・ピットとベテラン刑事のモーガン・フリーマンが、それぞれ、FBI新人捜査官クラリスのジョディ・フォスターとその上司のスコット・グレン、そして、連続猟奇殺人鬼ジョン・ドゥのケヴィン・スペイシーが、レクター博士のアンソニー・ホプキンスをそれぞれ連想させる。 

だが、『セブン』には、新人刑事の妻役でグウィネス・パルトローが出演している。可愛くて綺麗な女優さん。ジェニファー・ロペスやクロエ・グレース・モレッツのような豊満な女性が好きなのだが、本作の痩せ過ぎ感のあるグウィネスにも惹かれる。憂いのある表情が魅力的。 

二人の主演男優の演技が対照的で面白かった。モーガン・フリーマンの落ち着いた佇まいとブラピのラフな言動。名コンビだと思う。 

そして、最も印象的なのは、サイコパスの殺人鬼を演じたケヴィン・スペイシー。レスター博士のアンソニー・ホプキンス同様、知性を感じる。７つの大罪をテーマに殺人を繰り返したジョン・ドゥ。狂っているが、犠牲者達の生前の所業を考えると何となく気持ちが分かってしまう自分にも恐怖を感じる。『ジョーカー』でアーサーがジョーカーに変貌する様をほくそ笑みながら観ていたことを思い出した。

The Greatest Showman #1

In May 2019, I watched the movie The Greatest Showman for the first time at Kinema Junpo Theater. I was moved to tears. After that, I watched it three times at theaters. I cried every time. The last theater was United Cinemas Terrace Mall Matsudo where I did it on IMAX and I was touched by the gorgeous pictures. 

Following Bohemian Rhapsody, it is the second most moving film I have ever watched. 

The story was not touching so much. The main character, Barnum, was a liar, and then the plot was predictable and not so deep. The film, however, is a musical. The music was so fabulous that I never cared about how good the story is. The songs were all wonderful. I was especially moved by "Never Enough," "This Is Me" and "From Now On." 

"Never Enough" is about deep love. I shed tears twice at the theaters. 

Then I was always moved to tears when I watched the characters singing "This Is Me." The powerful song was really exciting and amazingly fantastic. I can say that it is my most favorite song ever. 

"From Now On" is a positive song and it starts when Barnum, who was depressed, is encouraged and stands up again in a bar. I smiled in spite of myself every time I watched the scene thinking he picks himself too fast. Hugh Jackman as Barnum looked happy and optimistic in a good sense, which made me feel amused. I was also amused by how Jackman got out of the bar and run all out on the streets. Like "This Is Me," it made me feel that it is ridiculous to worry about something.

グレイテスト・ショーマン #1

2019年５月、『グレイテスト・ショーマン』をキネマ旬報シアターにて初観覧。感涙。その後、３回劇場観覧。全てで感涙。最後は2019年10月にユナイテッド・シネマ テラスモール松戸にてIMAXで観覧。映像の美しさにも感動した。 

生涯で、『ボヘミアン・ラプソディ』に次いで、２番目に感動した映画。 

物語はそれ程感動的ではない。主人公のバーナムは嘘つきだし、話の展開もありふれている。でも、本作はミュージカル映画。音楽の素晴らしさが圧倒的で、内容の良し悪しはそれ程気にならない。全ての曲が良い曲。特に感動的なのが、「ネバー・イナフ」、「ディス・イズ・ミー」、そして、「フロム・ナウ・オン」。 

「ネバー・イナフ」は深い愛の歌。２回落涙した。

「ディス・イズ・ミー」が流れるシーンでは毎回涙が溢れる。力強くて心躍る歌。生涯で一番好きな歌だと言い切れる。最高だ。 

「フロム・ナウ・オン」は前向きな歌で、落ち込んだバーナムが、周りから励まされて再び立ち上がる時に流れる歌。正直、そんなに早く立ち直るのかよ、と毎回思わず笑ってしまった。彼を演じるヒュー・ジャックマンの良い意味での能天気さや明るさが清々しい。そして、店を飛び出して全力で走る彼の姿は、本当に愉快だ。「ディス・イズ・ミー」同様、くよくよ悩んだりするのがバカバカしくなる曲。

About the Rock Band Queen

I had listened to mainly British rock music for a long time, such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Small Faces, Faces and Sex Pistols. I had not been interested in hard rock and progressive rock during the period. After that, I became a fan of Stone Roses, Blur and Oasis. 

As for Queen, I thought that several songs by the band were cool and beautiful but I did not come to want to purchase their albums because I then felt that it was like a hard rock band and looked kind of eccentric. Moreover, I did not like the appearance of Freddie Mercury who had a mustache and short hairs. Besides, my most favorite vocalist had been Rod Stewart for many years, though rock music freaks might snort and snicker at me about it. Anyway, Queen was too unique and eccentric to intrigue me. I had mentally needed rock music in my teens and twenties but I has regarded it as what not inspires but relaxes me since I turned 30. Now, I listen to it in lunch time and during commuting. Queen's songs seemed to be heavy and tense, so I had thought that I should have not listened to them when I was thinking something and wanted to relax. That is why I had not liked the British rock band until I watched the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. I at least had been curious about Queen, as well as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, so the release of the movie was a good opportunity to concretely know about the band. Then their success story really moved me. As a former British rock fan, I must listen to Greatest Hits, Queen's best album, which is the best-selling Album in the U.K. someday.

I especially love three songs in the movie. They are "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Radio Ga Ga" and "We Are the Champions." 

It is said that Freddie wrote "Bohemian Rhapsody" as his determination to live as a gay. Person who have been ready for anything looks really cool and dignified. 

"Radio Ga Ga" quite inspired me when I read the Japanese subtitles and knew what the lyrics means. At that time, I had felt myself getting out of shape and I had almost lost self-confidence until then. 

"We Are the Champions" reminds me of the victory ceremony after the final of the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The song was being played in the stadium and suitable for the Spain internationals who just won the championship. It also reminds me of Iniesta's volley shot which became the winner in the final. The scenes are unforgettable.

ロックバンド クイーン

ブリティッシュ・ロックばかり聴いていた時期があった。ビートルズに始まり、ローリング・ストーンズ、ザ・フー、キンクス、スモール・フェイセス、フェイセズ、そして、セックス・ピストルズ。ハードロックやプログレッシブ・ロックには興味が湧かず、その後好きになったバンドは、ストーン・ローゼス、ブラー、オアシスだった。 

クイーンに関しては、良い曲だなと思う曲はあったがアルバムを買おうという気にはならなかった。彼等の音楽がハードロック寄りで、少しキワモノに感じていた上に、フレディ・マーキュリーの短髪と口髭というルックスが生理的に受け付けられなかったからだ。そして、私が一番好きだったヴォーカリストはロッド・スチュワート。生粋のロックファンには鼻で笑われる趣味だ。そんな私にクイーンは少し濃過ぎた。 精神的に音楽が必要だった時代は10代から20代。30歳を過ぎた辺りから音楽は職場の昼休みか通勤時に聴く音になり、リラックスする為のものになった。強烈なクイーンの曲は、何かをしながら聴くには適していない。だから、映画『ボヘミアン・ラプソディ』まで彼等とは縁が無かった。ピンク・フロイドやレッド・ツェッペリン同様、ずっと気になっていたバンドではあったので、あの映画の公開は私にとってはいい機会だった。そして、物凄い感動を貰った。元ブリティッシュ・ロックファンとして、英国史上最も売れたクイーンのベストアルバム『グレイテスト・ヒッツ』はいつか聴かねばなるまい。 

『ボヘミアン・ラプソディ』で演奏される曲の中で凄く好きなのは、「ボヘミアン・ラプソディ」、「ラジオ・ガ・ガ」、そして「伝説のチャンピオン」の３曲。 

「ボヘミアン・ラプソディ」はフレディがゲイとして生きる決意表明の歌だと言われている。覚悟を決めた人間はカッコいい。 

「ラジオ・ガ・ガ」は、映画の日本語字幕を読んで初めてその歌の意味を知り、若い頃のような体力が無くなり自信を失いかけていた私を奮い立たせてくれた。 

「伝説のチャンピオン」は、サッカー南アフリカワールドカップ決勝でスペインがオランダに勝利した後の優勝セレモニーでスタジアム内に流れていたのを覚えている。スペイン代表の勇姿にとても合っていた。イニエスタのボレーシュートによる決勝ゴール同様、忘れられない光景だ。

Bohemian Rhapsody #1

In December 2018, I watched Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time at Movix Kameari. I could not stop crying. After that, I watched it four times at theaters. The last one was United Cinemas Terrace Mall Matsudo where I did it on Screen X. I was moved to tears every time I did. I want to watch it again at not a TV screen but a theater one. It is the most moving film I have ever done. The story follows the vocalist of the rock band Queen, Freddie Mercury, and his fellows. It describes friendship, glory, betrayal and various forms of love, not to mention music. 

I had not been a fan of Queen but I had known that Freddie was the vocalist of it and a gay, moreover, he died of AIDS in his forties, so the story was kind of predictable. The music, however, was really wonderful. I at first thought that the movie was unorthodox and unfair because many of Queen's great tunes were used in it but I gradually changed my mind and did not care about whether it is orthodox since I was moved to tears every time I watched it. The most important thing is to entertain me about movies. 

When I watched Rocketman which describes half of Elton John's life, I realized why I was really touched by Bohemian Rhapsody. It was because the story was about a rock band. I was fascinated by the atmosphere which not a solo artist but a rock band can create. 

I was always moved to tears at the scene where Queen is performing at Live Aid. Queen plays the song "Hammer to Fall" in the live scene, which always reminded me the song "Hammer (4.8 billion peoples' blues)" by The Blue Hearts, a Japanese rock band. "Hammer to Fall" was written by the guitarist of Queen, Brian May, and was included in Queen's album The Works released in 1984. "Hammer" released in 1987 was written by Mashima "Mercy" Masatoshi, the guitarist of The Blue Hearts that is my most favorite band in Japan. I am pleased if the young Mercy wrote the song in homage to Queen. Then I might have been detained to watch Bohemian Rhapsody and be quite moved by the film if the British band had inspired the members of the Japanese band that I love most deeply.

ボヘミアン・ラプソディ #1

2018年12月、『ボヘミアン・ラプソディ』を Movix 亀有にて初観賞。感涙。その後４回劇場観覧した。５回目のユナイテッド・シネマ テラスモール松戸においては Screen X で観覧。観る度に毎回泣いた、テレビ画面ではなく劇場でまた観たい、生涯で一番感動した映画。ロックバンド クイーンのヴォーカリスト、フレディ・マーキュリーと彼の仲間達の物語。音楽に加え、友情、栄光、裏切り、そして様々な形の愛が詰まっている。 

クイーンのファンではなかったが、ヴォーカルのフレディがゲイでエイズに罹って早逝した事くらいは知っていたので、物語の展開は想定内だった。素晴らしかったのは、音楽。クイーンの名曲をふんだんに使っているので、映画としては邪道かもしれないと思っていた時期も確かにあったが、毎回泣かされるうちにそんな事はどうでもよくなった。映画は面白ければそれでいい。 

また、エルトン・ジョンの半生を描いた映画『ロケットマン』を観覧した後、『ボヘミアン・ラプソディ』に凄く感動した理由が分かった気がした。それはバンドの物語だったからだ。ソロ・アーティストでは生み出せない、バンドでしか醸し出せない雰囲気に魅せられたのだろう。 

バンドエイドでの演奏シーンでは毎回泣いた。そして、その中の「ハンマー・トゥ・フォール」という曲を聴く度に、日本のロックバンド、ザ・ブルーハーツのナンバー「ハンマー（48憶のブルース）」を思い出した。それぞれのギタリスト、ブライアン・メイと真島昌利が作詞・作曲している。前者は1984年に発表されたクイーンのアルバム『ザ・ワークス』に収録されていて、マーシーの曲は1987年発表。若き日のマーシーのクイーンに対するオマージュだったとしたら嬉しい。ザ・ブルーハーツは私が一番好きな日本のロックバンド。クイーンが彼等に影響を与えていたとしたら、私と『ボヘミアン・ラプソディ』の出会いは運命だったのかもしれない。
