Hustlers

In February 2020, I watched Hustlers at TOHO Cinemas Kinshicho Olinas in Sumida Ward, Tokyo. 

Although I had hugely been looking forward to seeing various pretty women, yet I was captivated only by Jennifer Lopez in the end. I saw the Hispanic beauty for the first time in ten years. She, however, was still beautiful and attractive, moreover, dignified. When I watched her stately walking, I felt at a moment that a celestial beauty might be allowed to commit a crime. 

I had mixed feelings when her gang was trapping rich men. That also made me think that I must be careful for beautiful women to come on to me if I should get big money. 

Jen's strip show was a sight to see. The beauty and gorgeousness of J.Lo attracted and overwhelmed me. The single one show quite deserved watching. The lead, Constance Wu, was attractive, too. 

Hustlers was inspired by a true story, so it made me thinking a lot. The former strippers lived desperately in their own way and as a result they deviated from social norms. I cannot approve of what they did but I do not want to criticize them.

ハスラーズ

2020年２月、『ハスラーズ』をTOHOシネマズ錦糸町オリナスで観覧。

様々な美女が拝めると期待に胸膨らませて臨んだが、結局目を奪われたのはジェニファー・ロペスだけだった。相変わらず綺麗で妖艶な上、知らない間に貫禄も付いていて、颯爽と歩く彼女に見惚れつつ、絶世の美女は多少罪を犯しても許されるのではないかと一瞬思ってしまった。

そんな彼女の一味にカモられる男達を複雑な気分で眺めつつ、万一金回りが良くなったら、近づいてくる女には気を付けようとも思った。

アジア系のヒロインも魅力的だったが、圧巻だったのは、ジェイローのストリップのステージ。美しさやらセクシーさやら女っぷりに圧倒され、あれだけでも観た甲斐があった。

事実を基にしているので、色々考えさせられる物語。彼女達は彼女達なりに必死に生きた。そして、それが社会の規範に反していた。だから、賞賛は出来ない。でも、批判する気にもなれない。

Male Leads and the 2020 Academy Awards

In 2019, three actors quite impressed me at theaters. Joaquin Phoenix, Willem Dafoe and Taron Egerton. The 2020 Best Actor Oscar winner wonderfully acted Arthur and Joker in the controversial movie. The 2019 Oscar nominee played Vincent van Gogh as if he was possessed by the great painter in At Eternity's Gate. And the Welsh actor gave a wonderful performance as Elton John in Rocketman. 

I feel sorry that Taron Egerton was not even nominated for the 2020 Best Actor Oscar. However, even Robert De Niro in The Irishman was not done either, so all the 2020 Best Actor Oscar nominees must have been more fantastic, though I cannot understand why Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that I watched in October 2019 when he did not impress me so much, in addition, I cannot understand why Matt Damon and Christian Vale in Ford v Ferrari were both not even nominated.

2020年アカデミー賞と主演男優達

2019年に劇場観覧した映画の主演男優の中で、その演技に深く感銘を受けたのは、今回のアカデミー賞主演男優賞を受賞したホアキン・フェニックス、『永遠の門』においてゴッホが憑依したかのような演技が凄まじかったウィレム・デフォー、そして、『ロケットマン』でエルトン・ジョンを熱演したタロン・エガートンのお三方。 

ウィレム・デフォーは前回のアカデミー賞でノミネートされていたが、タロン・エガートンが今回ノミネートすらされていなかったのは、残念だった。『アイリッシュマン』のロバート・デ・ニーロすらノミネートされていなかったから、ノミネートされた俳優達がそれだけ素晴らしかったということだろう。『ワンス・アポン・ア・タイム・イン・ハリウッド』のレオナルド・ディカプリオがノミネートされていたのは、観ていただけに腑に落ちなかったが。加えて、『フォードvsフェラーリ』のマット・デイモンとクリスチャン・ベールがノミネートすらされていなかったのも解せない。

Joker

Joker is my most favorite movie among ones released in 2019. I watched it twice at a theater. 

In November 2019, I watched it for the first time at Movix Kameari. In a word, shocking. After watching it, I did not know whether it was just shocking or a masterpiece. It had such an impact. Although I could empathize with the main character, Arthur, yet I could not ruminate about the film for a while after that. 

In December 2019, I watched The Irishman at Kinema Junpo Theater in Kashiwa City, Chiba. After that, I did not feel like directly going home, and then I somehow remembered about Joker. I then felt that it was about time to face it again, so I went to Movix Kameari at night. 

I naturally empathized Arthur again as the last time, which made me felt uneasy because I suspected that I might be a psychopath. I also thought that I was lucky because I had not had been in a plight like the protagonist. I then feared myself when I realized that I was gloating over how Arthur changed from Happy to Joker. That was a tragedy but a strange world which encouraged me. 

I believe that people must be true themselves, yet it is sad if they cannot help committing crimes. 

The acting of Joaquin Phoenix really rocked my soul. When feeling the spirit of a performer, the performance is art. 

Robert De Niro was fat and hardly looked tough and sharp, so his features reminded me Danny DeVito. Mr. De Niro can play various roles, which is amazing. 

ジョーカー

2019年に公開された映画の中で１番感動したのは、『ジョーカー』。２回、劇場観覧した。 

まず、2019年11月にMovix亀有にて観覧。一言で言うと、衝撃的。観賞後、ただショッキングなだけか、名作か判断がつかなかった。そんな衝撃だった。主人公に感情移入は出来た。だが、しばらくの間、作品自体を直視することは出来なかった。 

そして、2019年12月、キネマ旬報シアターにて『アイリッシュマン』を観覧後、真っ直ぐ家に帰る気になれず、そんな時、『ジョーカー』を思い出し、改めて向き合う時が来たと感じて、Movix亀有に足を運んだ。 

前回同様、主人公のアーサーに自ずと感情移入している自分がいた。サイコパスの気があるのかと不安にもなったが、彼のような過去が無い自分はラッキーだったとも思えた。そして、アーサーが覚醒しジョーカーへ変貌する様にほくそ笑んでいる自分を、怖くもなった。悲惨な物語だが、なぜか勇気付けられる不思議な世界。 

人は自分に正直に生きるべきだと思う。でも、その結果、法を犯してしまうのは哀しい。 

ホアキン・フェニックスの演技には、大げさでなく心が震えた。魂を感じる演技は芸術だと思う。 

太った、精悍さも無いロバート・デ・ニーロは、ダニー・デヴィートとダブって見えた。彼は本当に演技の幅が広い。 

BlacKkKlansman

In July 2019, I watched BlacKkKlansman for the first time at Wasedasochiku, a movie theater, which cost me just 800 yen at that time. I had wanted to know the reason why Spike Lee got angry in the 2019 Academy Awards ceremony as Green Book was declared the winner for Best Picture. Watching it, I understood his feelings because I felt that it was definitely one of the masterpieces among Spike Lee joints. At the same time, however, I thought that it was political, so the loss could not be helped in the Academy Awards. All the same, the film seemed to be politically meaningful and a masterpiece in the world. It moreover entertained me so much that I shortly found it in myself to watch it again. 

Two days later, I went to the same theater where I watched both Do the Right Thing and the latest Spike Lee film, which cost me mere 1,300 yen. The theater usually runs double features and its admission price is reasonable, as well as Megro Cinema and Iidabashi Ginrei Hall. The old movie gave me a nostalgia a little and impressed me, but it was so serious that I could not relax so much. The latest one was different. It was not only serious but entertaining. 

I love BlacKkKlansman, which is historically and politically meaningful, as well as Do the Right Thing and Malcom X. In addition, it is enjoyable. It is also one of my favorite three movies which were released in Japan in 2019. 

The lead, John David Washington, looks inconspicuous, unlike his father, Denzel Washington. He, however, was wonderfully acting the first African-American officer suffering from racial discrimination in a police department. Adam Driver playing gave a good performance as the African-American officer's partner, too. I also liked Laura Harrier, who looked pretty and struck me through.

ブラック・クランズマン

2019年７月、早稲田松竹にて『ブラック・クランズマン』を観覧。料金は800円。スパイク・リーが、2019年のアカデミー賞授賞式にて、『グリーンブック』が作品賞に選ばれた時に怒りを露わにした理由をずっと知りたかったが、観賞後、その理由が何となく理解出来た。落選した『ブラック・クランズマン』は、間違いなく彼の名作の一つと言える。だが、政治色が濃い面がある為、作品賞には相応しくないと判断されたのだろう。個人的には、政治的に意義があり世界に通用する名作だと思う。その上、娯楽性も高かったので、すぐにまた再観覧する気になった。

その２日後、再度早稲田松竹に来館し、『ドゥ・ザ・ライト・シング』と『ブラック・クランズマン』の２本を観覧。料金は1,300円。目黒シネマや飯田橋ギンレイ・ホール同様、早稲田松竹も、映画を２本続けて比較的安く観れる劇場である。前者は、古い映画で幾分懐かしさもあり感動もした。だが、結構シリアスな作品でもあるため、そんなに気晴らしにはならなかった。しかし、後者は少し違う。シリアスでもあり娯楽性も有る作品。

『ブラック・クランズマン』はお気に入りの映画。そして、『ドゥ・ザ・ライト・シング』や『マルコムX』同様、歴史的および政治的にも意義のある作品。その上、この作品は楽しく観れる。昨年日本で公開された映画の中で最も気に入った３本のうちの一つでもある。

主人公を演じたジョン・デヴィッド・ワシントンは、父親のデンゼル・ワシントンと違って、あまり華が無い。だが、初の黒人警官として警察署で働きながら人種差別に思い悩む役を見事に演じ切っていた。彼の相棒役を演じたアダム・ドライバーも好演していた。そして、ローラ・ハリアー。とても綺麗で可愛らしく、ずっと魅入られていた。

Green Book

In March 2019, I watched Green Book at Movix Kameari. It was fun. The main character, Tony Lip, played by Viggo Mortensen was particularly amusing and so human that I often remembered the behaviors of the Italian bouncer and chauffeur for a while after watching it. Then I was surprised when I knew that the lead was not an Italian but a Danish-American. He must have studied hard about the way Tony were. I, however, did not feel that the movie deserved going out of my way to go to a theater at that time maybe because I had known that the film won the 2019 Oscar for Best Picture and I had expected too much from it. 

In September 2019, I watched the two movies The Favourite and Green Book at Megro Cinema, which cost me just 1,400 yen. As well as Iidabashi Ginrei Hall, the movie theater usually runs double features and its admission price is reasonable. Honestly, I had expected more from The Favourite than Green Book but I was kind of disappointed at the black comedy film maybe because it highlighted the fear of women and it was not good for a change. Contrary to my expectations, however, the heartwarming movie amused and entertained me far more than the previous time. I thought that it was because I had forgotten about the Oscar at that time and I watched it without extra expectations. Furthermore, my physical conditions were better than the last time when I suffered from hay fever. 

My feelings about films vary with diverse factors, so I am not cut out for a film critic. 

I love Green Book, especially the main character, Tony Lip, whose straightforward behaviors fascinate and impress me. Viggo Moretnsen gave a wonderful performance as the jovial and easygoing Italian. Moreover, the friendship between the hero and an African-American pianist moved me and has makes me think about racial discrimination.

グリーンブック

2019年３月、Movix亀有にて『グリーンブック』を観覧した。面白かった。特に、用心棒で運転手のイタリア人主人公が愉快で、とても人間味に溢れていて、観覧後も、度々彼の言動を思い出していた。ただ、その主演のヴィゴ・モーテンセンが、実はイタリア人ではなくデンマーク系アメリカ人であることには驚いたが。彼は、イタリアン人の仕草等をかなり研究したに違いない。しかし、わざわざ映画館で観るべき映画とは思わなかった。恐らく、アカデミー賞作品賞を受賞していた為、過度に期待し過ぎていたせいでそう感じたのだろう。 

2019年９月、目黒シネマにて『女王様のお気に入り』と『グリーンブック』を観覧。料金は1,400円だった。飯田橋ギンレイホール同様、作品を２本続けて観れる良心的な映画館。正直、お目当ては前者だったが、女の恐ろしさが際立っていて良い気分転換にはならず、それ程楽しめなかった。逆に、予想に反して、『グリーンブック』は凄く愉快に感じて昨年３月よりも遥かに楽しめた。前回はアカデミー賞受賞作と思いながら観たが、今回は『女王陛下のお気に入り』のおまけで何となく観た。その所為かもしれない。また、前回は花粉症に苦しんでいた。その所為もあったのだろう。 

様々な要因で映画評が変わってしまうので、私は評論家向きではない。 

『グリーンブック』の魅力は、主人公トニー・リップの単純明快な思考や言動。主役のヴィゴ・モーテンセンは愉快で呑気なイタリア人を見事に演じ切っている。さらに、黒人ピアニストとの友情も感動的で、また、人種問題についても考えさせられた。
