Timothy Dalton as 007

In 2020 fall, I first watched The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill, which stars Timothy Dalton and are  the fifteenth and sixteenth films of the 007 series, on the television set. I have done the spy action ones several times since then. They were both released in 1987 and 1989 respectively.

The two films depict the activities of James Bond who is a crack agent with English intelligence agency.

Sean Connery's and Roger Moore's Bonds randomly have sex with pretty women, however, Timothy Dalton's Bond does not resemble them about it, moreover, he makes less jokes, so he looks kind of straight-laced. When he was in his early forties, he looked older than Moore in his fifties also. Although the third Bond actor is far more suitable as the lead of a blockbuster than the fourth one, yet Dalton's 007 films are intriguing as spy action ones because Dalton's Bond looks more serious, in addition, I like his because he is not frivolous, like Daniel Craig's Bond, though he appears plainer than other Bonds. Dalton also does not more stylish as Bond than other Bonds but he is certainly a cool actor anyway.

Bond girls are pretty in the two movies. I bet it is because Dalton's Bond looks less gorgeous than other Bonds. Maryam D'Abo in The Living Daylights, Carey Lowell and Talisa Soto in Licence to Kill especially are lovely and bewitching.

The young Benicio del Toro acts as one of the villains in Licence to Kill which is his second flick. The performer has had a presence since then.

Dalton's 007 films as well as Craig's ones have a serious style, though I do not think of Dalton's Bond as not sexier than Craig's, so I am sorry for the fans of Dalton's ones but I do not prefer them to other 007 ones. All the same, I think that Dalton's two flicks are good as spy action ones.

ティモシー・ダルトンの007

ティモシー・ダルトンが主演した『007』シリーズの第15作と第16作、『リビング・デイライツ』と『消されたライセンス』を2020年秋にTV画面にて初観賞。その後もこれまでに数回観ているスパイアクション映画。それぞれ1987年と1989年に公開された。

イギリスの諜報機関の凄腕スパイ、ジェームズ・ボンドの活躍を描いた作品群。

ショーン・コネリーとロジャー・ムーアが演じていたボンドは、美女たちとすぐに男女の仲になるが、ティモシー・ダルトンが演じたボンドはそうではない。その上、ダルトンが演じた彼はジョークもより少ない。そのせいで彼は堅物に見える。それに、50代でボンドを演じていたムーアは40代前半の彼よりも若々しく見える。娯楽大作の主役としては、やはり、ロジャー・ムーアは別格だ。だが、真面目に見える分、ダルトンが主演した作品はスパイ物としては面白い。そして、後にダニエル・クレイグが演じたボンドと似ている、浮ついていないという点は好感が持てる。だが、歴代のジェームズ・ボンド俳優と比べるとやはり地味に映る。でも、それは、ボンド俳優としてはそう見えるというだけで、ダルトンがカッコいい俳優さんである事は確かだ。

２作品のボンドガールに関しては、ダルトンが歴代俳優と比べて華やかさに欠けるせいか、美人ぞろいだ。『リビング・デイライツ』のマリアム・ダボ、『消されたライセンス』のキャリー・ローウェルとタリサ・ソトがそれぞれ綺麗で妖艶だ。

そして、『消されたライセンス』には若いベニチオ・デル・トロが悪役で出演している。彼にとっては２作目の映画出演らしい。この頃から存在感がある俳優さんだ。

２作品ともダニエル・クレイグ主演の『007』と同じくシリアスな作風だが、あくまでも私の主観だが、ダルトンにはクレイグほどの男の色気が感じられないので、ファンの方には申し訳ないが、両作とも『007』作品としてはあまり好きではない。だが、スパイ映画としては良作だと思う。

Last Night in Soho

In December 2021, I watched Last Night in Soho for the first time at Movix Kameari. The horror film was released in 2021 starring Thomasin McKenzie. The promotional posters had made me think that the lead was Anya Taylor-Joy, however, it was actually Thomasin. She appeared in Old for shorter than I had expected, which kind of disappointed me, so I was pleased that I could watch the pretty actor from start to end and for a longer than expected in the newer flick.

It tells the story of a woman named Ellie who moves to London from a country town, starts to live in an apartment and has spiritual experiences at nights.

The beautiful Thomasin McKenzie played Ellie who strongly senses to the spiritual world and sees the sad past of a woman. I felt the horror movie to be a fantasy one because I was really attracted from beginning to end by Thomasin's lovely various expressions, especially her smiles and scared faces, and by how she often runs in the town. I was also draw by how the story unfolds after the middle. It was really fun.

At the beginning Ellie's lovely smile charmed me when she is dancing in her parents' house in the countryside. Then I empathized with her when she is listening to a song performed by The Kinks, my favorite rock band, and she is made a fool of by an impertinent young man, who says that only old men love the band, in the dormitory of a fashion school that she has begun to attend. People who criticize other people's taste are the lowest scum. Ellie's wicked roommate, who often ridicules Ellie for being a country girl and eccentric, reminded me of the mean smile of my former coworker, a native of Tokyo, who mocked me and said that it was like a poem when I told her that I felt the sky in Tokyo to be narrow due to the higher buildings just after moving to there from a local town. I hate people who ridicule country persons. I came to love Ellie more watching the scenes. In additions to The Kinks, I also like the music, especially the song "Down Town" that Sandie, who was played by Anya Taylor-Joy, sings in an audition. Various elements struck a chord with me, so I really love the story personally.

This movie's plot and the lovely Thomasin McKenzie were so fascinating that the horror scenes did not leave a strong impression to me. The protagonist and the script were really wonderful.

ラストナイト・イン・ソーホー

2021年12月、Movix亀有にて『ラストナイト・イン・ソーホー』を初観賞。2021年公開のホラー映画。主演はトーマシン・マッケンジー。宣伝用のポスターからアニャ・テイラー＝ジョイが主人公を演じているのかと思いきや、主役はトーマシンだった。『オールド』では出演シーンが期待していたよりも短かったが、本作では全編にわたってその美しい姿を拝めたので嬉しい限りだった。

田舎からロンドンに出てきた若い女性エリーが、あるアパートで生活を始めて以降、夜な夜な霊的な体験をする物語。

ある女性の悲しい過去を垣間見る霊感の強いエリー。美しいトーマシン・マッケンジーが演じたその彼女の、やたらと街中を走り回る姿や、笑顔、怯える顔といった様々な表情が終始愛らしくて、ホラーというよりもファンタジーに感じた。そして、後半の展開にも惹き込まれた。マジで面白かった。

冒頭の、田舎の実家で踊るエリーの愛らしい笑顔にまず惹き込まれた。そして、彼女がロンドンのデザイン学校の寮で生活を始めた時、彼女が聴いていた、私も大好きなバンド、キンクスを、生意気そうな若い男が、ジジイが聴く音楽だと言って彼女を馬鹿にする場面で彼女への感情移入の度合いが高まった。人の好みを馬鹿にするヤツは最低だ。また、彼女を事あるごとに田舎から出てきた変わり者だとからかう彼女の性悪なルームメートの顔が、田舎から上京した頃、建物の高い東京は空が狭いと感じた事を東京育ちの同僚に話した時にポエムみたいねとバカにしてきたその東京女の意地悪な顔を連想させた。田舎者を馬鹿にするヤツはキライだ。それで、余計にエリーが愛しくなった。音楽も私好みだった。キンクスだけでなく、アニャ・テイラー＝ジョイ演じるサンディがオーディションで歌った「ダウンタウン」は私の大好きな曲だ。様々な要素が私の心の琴線に触れる為、個人的にとても愛おしい物語だった。

ホラー要素も割とあるが、そんな事を忘れさせる美しいトーマシン・マッケンジーと物語の展開に酔いしれた作品。彼女と脚本が素晴らしい。

The Last Duel

In November 2021, I watched The Last Duel for the first time at Movix Kameari. The history film was released in 2021 and based on the actual events in 1386. The director is Ridley Scott who was 83 years old on the release.

The story follows three persons whose names are Carrouges, Marguerite and Le Gris respectively. Carrouges is a knight. Marguerite is his wife. Le Gris is a friend of Carrouges but the man rapes Marguerite, who confesses it to his husband, then Carrouges accuses Le Gris of the rape and requests a duel to the death that which Le Gris accepts. It is depicted from the three persons' perspective.

Carrouges played by Matt Damon is rustic and values his honor above all. Le Gris done by Adam Driver is intelligent and worldly wise, moreover, he is self-righteous and aggressive against women. I think that some of important figures in local communities are like the two men. If you take a high position in a small world, you can get what you want there in most cases, you can cover up crimes you committed, and you can be protected by people around you. I was born and raised in a local area, so I know that you can if you do. Carrouges values his pride above all and he hardly tries to learn the real feelings of his wife. Le Gris falls in love with his friend's wife and assumes her to be tired of her tactless husband and does her to be fond of himself, so he suddenly visits Carrouges' house and raped her in her husband's absence. Such tragedy can happen these days. Marguerite done by Judie Comer has to accept her fate of being at the mercy of the two men who cannot seriously give their attention to her. Women were sadly discriminated against more than today. The three actors gave a wonderful performances in it.

Court by force in Medieval Europe, which rules in favor of the winner of a duel to the death, is acceptable to me, for I am a man and I think thatduels were a kind of entertainment for men with great physical strength in those days because they can feel the adrenaline flow in duels and they had few amusements. As a man I can imagine the pleasure that I feel when I fight following my wild instincts in a war and a duel as a last option, though I have no intention to unnecessarily hurt people.

I eventually feel it to be surreal as a modern person especially about the duel because the times differ too much, however, many movie fans were touched by the flick very much, so I feel sad that my sensibility might be far lower. Certainly, I lack a sense of art.

最後の決闘裁判

2021年11月、Movix亀有にて『最後の決闘裁判』を初観賞。2021年公開の歴史映画。公開時83歳のリドリー・スコット監督作。1386年に実際に起きた事件を基にしている。

騎士カルージュの妻マルグリットが夫の友人ル・グリから性的暴行を受け、それを知ったカルージュが決闘裁判でル・グリと対決するお話。物語は３人の視点で描かれている。

マット・デイモンが演じたカルージュは無骨で何よりも自分の名誉が大事な男。アダム・ドライバー演じるル・グリは知的で世渡り上手で女性に独りよがりな想いを押し付ける男。二人とも地方の有力者の中にいそうな人物だ。小さな世界のトップに立てば大抵の事は自分の思い通りになるし、法を犯しても、それをもみ消せるし周りの人間たちに守られる。私は地方出身なのでその程度の事はあり得ることだと知っている。自分のプライドが何よりも大切なカルージュは妻の本当の気持ちを知ろうとせず、マルグリットに横恋慕しているル・グリは、彼女がガサツな夫に実は嫌気がさしていて知的な自分に好意を抱いていると思い込んで、カルージュ不在時の家を突然訪問して彼女を凌辱する。ここまでは、現代でも起こり得る悲劇だ。その後、カルージュは己の面子にかけてル・グリと決闘する事となる。ジョディ・カマー演じるマルグリットは、女性に真摯に向き合えない彼らに翻弄される運命をただただ受け入れなければならなかった。現代以上に女性が差別されている時代の悲しいお話だ。お三方の演技はとても素晴らしかった。

相手の命を奪った方が正しいという判決が下される中世ヨーロッパの決闘裁判に関しては、理不尽だが、男としては理解できる。娯楽が少ない時代の決闘は、腕力に自信のある男たちにとって、アドレナリンが体中に湧き上がる快感を味わえる、ある意味、一種の娯楽であったのではないだろうか。私も男なので、徒に他人を傷つけたいという気持ちはないが、戦争や最終手段としての決闘の際の、本来ヒトに備わっている野性の本能を解放できる瞬間の快感は想像できる。

結局、時代が違い過ぎるので一現代人としては、特に決闘に関しては、シュールに感じる作品だった。だが、大勢の方々が感動しているので、自分の感受性が低いのかなと悲しくもなる。確かに、私には芸術に対する感性が欠けている。

Another Round

In October 2021, I watched Another Round for the first time at Kinema Junpo Theater. The Danish film was released in September 2021 starring Mads Mikkelsen who is called a Scandinavian treasure in Japan.

Although I had thought that it tells a story about a man who becomes the subject of a full-scale experiment done by a university or a laboratory in order to prove that persons can have fulfilling private life and work with moderate alcohol, yet it just depicts four close high school teachers who try to kind of seriously test a scholar's theory about moderate alcohol's effect on their lives and fall into a situation that drinking persons can imagine.

Friendship among the four men were heartwarming. So were how Martin, a history teacher looking dumb, played by Mikkelsen gradually gives intriguing lessons with the help of alcohol and how his students' expression become lively. Then I was drawn by the drama of Martin facing a midlife crisis and his wife. Mikkelsen also shows a brilliant dance as if he is taking out pent-up frustration caused by playing a lame ordinary man at the last scene. The ending was really refreshing.

About Denmark, I only knew chocolate Danish and I remembered that we played against the country in the group stage of the 202 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Tomasson, a former teammate of Japanese legend Shinji Ono at Feyenoord in the Netherlands league, scored on a penalty kick in the game, however, after that he was injured and replaced. That was kind of why we easily won the game. In addition to the memories, I could learn the Scandinavian country's atmosphere a little thanks to the movie. Watching foreign flicks is meaningful because I can enjoy myself feeling an air of each country and something which I never can learn from literal information.

アナザーラウンド

2021年10月、キネマ旬報シアターにて『アナザーラウンド』を初観賞。2021年９月公開のデンマーク映画。主演は、日本では「北欧の至宝」と呼ばれているマッツ・ミケルセン。

適度のアルコールが仕事やプライベートを充実させる事を証明するための大学か研究所による本格的な実験の被疑者になる男の物語、かと思いきや、実際には、適度のアルコールの効果について書かれたある学者の論文が正しいかどうかを割と真面目に確かめようとした仲良し高校教師４人組が、ある時から、飲むのが好きな人間なら誰しもが想像できるような展開に陥るお話。

その４人の友情が微笑ましかった。そして、マッツ様演じる冴えない歴史教師マーティンがお酒の力を借りて興味深い授業を始める様やその授業を受ける生徒たちの表情が生き生きとし出す様が微笑ましかった。まさに中年の危機を迎えていたマーティンとその妻とのドラマもまた観応えがあった。ラストシーンでは、マッツ様が、ダサい一般男性を演じた鬱憤を晴らすかのようなキレキレダンスを披露。爽快なエンディングだった。

デンマークと言えば、チョコデニッシュと2010年のサッカー南アフリカワールドカップで日本と対戦した国という知識しかなかった。あの試合では、オランダリーグのフェイエノールトで我らが小野伸二の同僚だったトマソンがPKを決めたが、その後、彼が負傷退場したこともあり楽に勝つことが出来た。そして、今回、この作品のおかげで新たにその北欧の国の雰囲気を若干だが知る事が出来た。外国映画の観賞は、文字情報だけでは得ることが出来ないその国の空気感等が堪能できて有意義だ。

The Courier

In October 2021, I watched The Courier for the first time at Movix Kameari. The American-British spy film is released in 2020 starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

It is based on the true story about Greville Wynne, a businessman in London, who was requested by the Secret Intelligence Service to assist its espionage and got to undertake it.

If an ordinary businessman living for his family's happiness was requested by his nation's intelligence organization to go to a foreign country under the guise of business trips and contact an informant who has classified information, he at first would reluctantly cooperate with it for world peace, gradually have patriotism that he had not done so much, get ready to work for it and finally become friends with the foreign informant. I can imagine that, however, nobody can do the act of chivalry that Mr. Wynne performed for the Soviet spy behind the Cuban Missile Crisis. Basically, it was reckless.

Benedict Cumberbatch gave a wonderful performance as Mr. Wynne who worries about the safety of the traitor to his homeland and continues to struggle even after he has fulfilled his jobs. The acting of Cumberbatch toward the ending especially was really emotional and reminded me of Kevin Bacon acting in Murder in the First.

I had viewed Thirteen Days and JFK, so I thought that I had known about the Cuban Crisis so much, however, the flick was more meaningful because it kind of showed me the role that the actual intelligence organization played behind the American politician's distress. Although I enjoy seeing the activities of super spies like James Bond and Ethan Hunt, yet I am intrigued in doing the ones of real ones like ones in the movie because I can enjoy a sense of more real tension.

The spy motion picture is wonderful and depicts a more serious human drama than the entertaining spy ones like the 007 franchise and the Mission: Impossible series.

クーリエ：最高機密の運び屋

2021年10月、Movix亀有にて『クーリエ：最高機密の運び屋』を初観賞。2020年公開。イギリスのスパイ映画。ベネディクト・ガンバーバッチ主演。

1960年代にイギリスの諜報機関MI６からスパイ活動の手助けを要請されてそれを引き受けてしまったロンドンのセールスマン、グレヴィル・ウィンの実話を基にした物語。

女房子供を幸せにするのが生きがいである一介のサラリーマンが、国の諜報機関から、ビジネスを装って外国に出張してその国の機密情報提供者と接触する事を依頼された場合、まず、世界平和の為ならと渋々協力、やがて、普段感じていなかった愛国心が芽生えてやりがいを感じるようになり、かの国のスパイにも次第に情が湧いてくる。ここまでは想像がつくが、キューバ危機の影でウィンさんがソ連のスパイに示した男気は絶対に真似できない。そもそも無謀だ。

ベネディクト・カンバーバッチが、MI６から依頼された仕事を全うしたにもかかわらず、世界平和の為に祖国を裏切ったソ連の内通者の安否を気遣い奮闘するウィンさんを見事に好演。特に、終盤のカンバーバッチの姿は、『告発』のケヴィン・ベーコンを連想するほど感動的だった。

キューバ危機に関しては『13デイズ』や『JFK』で何となく知っているつもりになっていたが、本作での、政治家たちの苦悩の影で実際の諜報機関がどういう役割を果たしていたのか少しだけ垣間見えて有意義だった。ジェームズ・ボンドやイーサン・ハントのようなスーパースパイの活動を観るのも楽しいが、本作のような実際のスパイの地道な活動を観るのもよりリアルな緊張感が味わえて面白い。

『007』や『ミッション・インポッシブル』のような娯楽作品以上にシリアスなヒューマン・ドラマが描かれたスパイ映画の名作だ。
